After delivering new emus come home to find carnage.

The wife and i went out this morning to deliver new babies to a few lucky  people. we came home to discover one of my yearlings missing half of its lower jaw and throat. The poor girl was calm and still alive . It appears the neighbours jack russell had gotton ahold of the bird by jumping up the 4ft high chainlink.I took photos for animal control who should arrive soon. Its not a shared fence the sob just lets his dogs run loose.

Remember its a pet in your house but a killer when it runs wild.

That's hard, I've lost animals to feral or loose dogs before.  I hate people who let their dogs run loose with a passion.

If it were me I'd be sitting out there with my bow waiting for the dog to come back a second time.

Just got done with animal control. didn't see it can't prove it must have been some other dog that you have never seen in the 2 years you have lived there says the neighbour. But we will go ahead and give the dog away tonight so we dont get a $1000.00 fine from the A.C. officer. but now I have to spend $2k to build a higher fence around my land. oh just so you know you cant shoot someones dog even on your properity. so can I borrow your bow?

Foulman, Sooooo sorry!  Everytime I read something like this, I rethink the whole GLD thing.  It hasn't happened to me yet, but it's just a matter of time.  I get strays on my property at least a few times a year, and I've got two(pet)  dogs here.

I had a nice long talk with the neighbour and he has agreed to remove the dog from his household if i dont press charges. I hate his son has to loose a pet but if he cant control it, then it should go . I really hate I had to loose a pet also. and that she had to suffer so badly. good fences make good neighbours.

So very sorry, that is horrible.....
We have a neighbor with wolf dogs that have killed neighbors farm animals. I am glad I have my Great Pyr dogs to keep off all unwanted animals...

Living and working on a Zoo farm - 300 plus chickens, fancy pigeons, Sebbies geese, turkey, crested ducks, peafowl, ornamental pheasant and ducks, Black swans, Egyptian geese, African Crowned Cranes, Emu, fainting goats, mini zebu, mini horses,mini donkey, alpacas, llamas, horses, 5 Great Pyrenees and a cat.

There are almost always laws that allow you to shoot strays to defend livestock. Check into it.

Rhode Island Reds, Speckled Sussex ,BBS Cochins, LF Polish, French Black Copper Marans, OEG  (Mille fleur colored)&Ameraucanas(LF), and Silkies The hens are laying!Check out my auctions on BSA for chicken  hatching eggs.

A jack russel are those small rat dogs right?  And it mauled the head/neck of a yearling EMU?  But the dog then got over a 4 foot fence and did that to a mostly grown emu?  Then it jumped back over the fence?

 

Are you sure it was the dog (a dog)?  The thing that makes me the most supiscious is the emu was still alive.  Did you find any other clues/signs it was a dog?  I myself lost a yearling emu to a bobcat last fall, in a pen right behind my house. 

 

Thinking over what i've read about wild emus, ive read that hawks/eagles prey on them in the wild and go for/attack the head.  I know its a long shot, but a emu with that kind of damage but not dead makes me think of a hawk/eagle attack that broke off the attack and flew away quick.

 

I saw a few stange dogs on my street recently, one VERY big.  I called the police right away and they told me I could shoot them if they tried to go after my goats or other animals.  Check your laws, you have the right to protect your animals on your property with deadly force, I am certain.

 

I would not tolerate any dog roaming off of its own property anywhere near where I live.  You should not either, you see a dog loaping around the neighborhood off a leash, call the police/animal control.  Period.

 

I have five dogs and I keep them all on my property or on walks on a LEASH.
