My yard is very shaded, is this going to be a problem? My chickens will get sun till about 11 or 12. I don't really have anywhere else to put them except the front yard...

Thanks for your help smile.png

Shade will not be a problem.

It probably will be a benefit in the summer. Keeping the coop and chickens a bit cooler.

Considering that the Chicago area gets pretty hot summers, I think that it is a plus that the coop is shaded in the afternoon.  Summer heat tends to be a bigger risk for chickens than winter cold in the Great Lakes area.  I've got my coop in the shade mostly.

The shade is definately needed where I live this place is hotter than two hells with a lid on it.

We're in the western 'burbs as well....

Our coop and run are under two big 'ol Maple Trees (30+ feet tall).  The leaves provide wonderful shade in the summertime and the lack of leaves provides some welcome sun in the winter season.  Trouble this year has been such a warm spring, the leaves aren't yet out so the coop is warmer than I'd like it to be.  But the girls are all doing fine with it!

The only challenge was trying to get the leaves raked up in the run - maple leaves are big!  We put 'em all in a big heap and let the girls have a blast with it!  Worked fine.  They had entertainment, we didn't have so many leaves to use on the garden beds.  We'll see if the garden does ok with that!
