I need to rant about work. Grrr - Page 2

Try asking your co-workers to cover for you.  Pay them if you can.  They have the seniority so you are out of luck on that deal, but maybe you can trade or pay them off.

Normally I would agree but that sounds like something that could go terribly wrong. Worth a try though!

You have a trade union?

The fact that others seek work, by the way, is not a justification for the exploitation of those who do have jobs.

Unions are against company policy.

Also I don't really like it when people try and make me feel guilty about how other people desperately want a job.

I know that, I was one of those people. Then I was lucky to get my job, which is why I don't want to jeopardize it.

A sad situation - no right of representation and bullied out of a few days' leave. A long time ago, people gave up their lives and liberty to end abuse in the workplace but it seems to be creeping back nowadays.

I managed up to 250 people at a time and believed that if you are fair with them most will be fair in return. Go easy when things are smooth and they will be there for you when it's tough. Occasionally, one will take advantage but the others usually straighten them out. As an example, one employee asked for a few days' leave for a funeral of a parent. It didn't seem enough, given the relationship, so I suggested a week and call me if you need to at the end of that. 'What about my annual leave? I'll have none left.' I suggested that it wouldn't be a problem if she was reasonable about the time off for the funeral, grieving and other things. She took the week, didn't lose leave entitlement and the whole office though that the boss was a hero. I was paid back many times over with goodwill. HR, many miles away, were never told about my slant on employee relations!

If you are harsh with people, you will lose in the end. Paid work is there to fund your life, not replace it.

Yes it is creeping back.

Hubby's work place has that same tendency. You take a vacation, you don't know if you will HAVE a job. Even when I ended up in the hospital two weeks ago, there was no one to take my daughter to school for three days so hubby had to wait in time to take her to school and get off to take her home and back to work. They were threatening to fire him and "dock" his points. If he uses up ten points, he is gone. He was more than willing to make up time (an hour) but they didn't want to listen to that. That place has a very high turnover rate and not very many employees worked there for more than one or two years. Yeah, they may be the sub contractor of the Big Yellow but they are wanting to follow the same examples of the BIG company's rules.

Hubby didn't earn his vacation for six months. AFter that, he was able to earn it for each forty hour week, he will get an hour of vacation time. Took him a long time just to get a week off. Health insurance, well, that is one of the perks. In his workplace, if an employee needs a hour or a week off, the employees CAN pool one hour of their vacation time to the person who needs time off.

Illinois state is a "free-at-will" state. Any employers can fire you without any reason at all nor should they give you a reason. Time for Illinois to change that anarchy thinking firing employees.

Yea, AL is one of those states as well. They can pretty much fire you just because.

I work for a very well known mega superstore that you all shop at. You know, the one that is slowly taking over the world.

The employees are a dime a dozen, and they pay us as little as legally possible and work us as much as legally possible.

You might need a docs note though....fall and pretend you sprained your ankle real badly...tell the doctor your job requires you to be on your feet for several hours a day...and that you cant work for a few days and that you'll need a note stating that you need to stay off the ankle..

LOL don't listen to me., I'll get ya fired...
