New to chickens and BYC

Thread Starter

Hey everyone! We've been doing a lot of reading here the last 6 weeks and have made a few posts, but thought we should officially introduce ourselves.

We are a homeschool family in eastern NC and are venturing into chickens. We started out with an incubator that we rented and 12 eggs that we got to use as a teaching experience for our kids. We learned all about the development of chickens inside the eggs, and have read books, read online and researched all about chickens (though of course there is still a lot to learn!)

We hatched 8 chicks, 4 barred rocks, 2 ameracauna, and 2 RIR. Then we ordered 15 silver laced wyandottes (but 16 arrived). We constructed a coop in our shed and built a run on the outside, we started a thread with pictures of it.

The plan is fresh eggs in the fall! Thank you already for all that y'all have put on here for us to learn!

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan big_smile.png

Home of the world's cutest dachshund, one crazy blue heeler, two cats,
one fat pony, and many (but not too many!) chickens

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?
