Shrink wrapped ducklings?

Thread Starter

Hi everyone, I was just wondering how to know if a duckling is becoming "shrink wrapped" during hatching. The membrane isn't stuck to the shell and it's tightly wrapped around the duckling. Is this normal?

1 very sweet American Akita, 4 Mallards (2 in heaven RIP Cheese and Quackers), 4 Welsh Harlequins , 3 Khaki Campbells, 3 Calls (1 silver and 2 Blue Bibbed), 1 lazy 15 year old cat, 1 wild possum that lives under the barn, 2 guinea pigs (1 silkie and 1 white crested) , and 2 Betta fish.

Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change

I don't think so if it's white and looks like paper more than likely shrink wrapped.  but i don't hatch in a bator so I maybe wrong, trying to remember all I have read.  Hope someone else comes along to help you.

Thank you! It is white and papery. I hope they make it. The third was dead when I candled it and it looks like it died of suffocation upon further investigation. I'm keeping the humidity up high and spraying them every so often.

Sounds like they're shrink wrapped.  There's been a lot of that going on lately with my hatching friends.  How far along are they in the hatching process?  Meaning how did you see inside.  And what day are they on?

One city boy husband that I'm converting to a poultry boy, 3 daughters, 3 Mallards, 2 dogs, one cat: and the bator's plugged in.  Hatching addict, BYC addict and you can find me in the forum "formerly known as hatch day is today" with my friends: Miss Lydia, Critterrun, StillMecle, GrannyCarol, JulieNKC, DuckGirl89, 70%Cocoa, Evelle and JazminesZoo.  I love my Gurlz!

Sounds like shrink wrap, I'm with QJ.  Have you made a very small hole in the middle of the round end to peek in and see what the shape of things are?

If hes wrapped, your gonna have to sterilize  something (I keep rubbing alcohol, paper towels, and a litltle plastic bowl near.  IF your sure they are totally due today or sooner, make a small hole, look in.  if its bright paper white, then baby will have trouble gettin gout.  I start with locating the beak with my finger (clean) through a very small open end (big end).  once you find beak, if you can, be SURE there is not blood vessils over it.  I make a very small hole, and be sure beak is out.  If beak is out, the tiny breathing hole will be enough for now.

Take a pic of what you have, and post it.

Why don't sheep shrink in the rain?

Why is there brail at drive up ATMs??

Why are their floatation devices instead of parachutes in my airplain seat???

If a tree falls in the woods and my husband doesn't hear it, am I still wrong????

They started to break the shell and I noticed that the membrane wasn't attached to the shell. It was also white and papery. I've been spraying them, but they started peeping like they were struggling and in pain. I gently moved away some of the shell and old membrane and they did a little better. I'm still worried because I noticed that they are premature and one has it's eyes open (and most likely imprinted) and whenever I leave starts peeping like mad which makes me feel bad. The yolk is still there and I'm leaving them alone for tonight (other than spraying when they look dry.) I'll probably be up all night checking on them and fretting.
