Brand new to chicken raising and can't wait to get started!

Thread Starter

Hi, my name is Kim and I have been researching backyard chicken raising for about 3 months now.  I think I am finally ready to "fly the coop" and order some chicks!  My family which consists of my 2 kids ages 9 and 10, my husband and I, our 2 labs and 1 border collie, a bearded dragon, a cat named George and a diva of a rat named Angie all live here in TX just north of Houston.  I think I have narrowed it down to Easter Eggers but was wondering if these are truly a quieter breed...I don't think my neighbors will have an issue but out of courtesy I want to try and do everything right!  I can't wait to place my order and can't wait to hear from others and how their experiences are going!

Welcome to BYC. My EE is usually quiet...except when she lays an egg. Chickens like to "announce" when they have laid an egg.

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?

Hello and welcome!  It seems a lot of chicken people are also rat people, hahaha!  Good luck with your new feathered kids!

We have a dozen different breeds of chickens and we love them all!
