Geese won't stop honking!

Block the light use double and triple layers of shade cloth to do so. It still allows air flow.

Do they have food and water inside? If not concider giving them a bucket of water and bowl of feed.

They most likely are wanting out at first light to get to the grass and their pool. Try the above and see if it helps.

I'm so sorry -- don't have anything very helpful to say, except that my geese seem to find lots to honk about in the middle of the night too . . . what is it about 3 a.m. ?

It's breeding season! That can have a lot to do with geese generally being noisy--- and territorial, too. Any noise or interruption of their normal environment can set them off, rats included.

 

Keeping their barn darker might help a little, but geese and ducks are all-night active (it has to do with being alert to predators) and will make a ruckus in the dark too.

 

Getting the rats under control is a good idea, with or without your goose-noise issue! There are lots of threads on that in the predator-pest forum, and you might find some helpful advice there.

I give my ducks and geese a bucket of water and bowl of food too, and toss in a big handful of fresh grass-hay for good measure. In the morning when I open the barn, the water is mucked up (I sweat I don't know how they do that when they are bedded on pine shavings!) and most of the food is gone and the hay mostly eaten. So it is obvious that they are active all night! Eating may keep them busy and not honking.

Waterfowl need to swim and be able to immerse and bathe, at least give them a couple of large playpools (cheap,$15 each usually). My ducks and geese get two playpools and two stock tanks and are in them all the time. Yours are probably noisy because they need alot more water than just a bucket.

Sasa she is discussing over night issues not daytime turned out issues. They don't get pools in their night houses, and these are being noisy over night and the wee hours of the morning. Thus the bucket of water and feed over night suggestions.
