My name is mamawantschicks- I don't have any chickens yet. But I'm anxious to get them. What's the best way to get started?

Make a coop first, or start one, have time and money, for starters I'd buy 3-4 chicks.

It's the shape that makes the breed, and the color that makes the variety.

Thanks for the suggestion. My other concern is how to manage going on trips. We usually don't go for very long but how does that work... or can it?

Hi and welcome from central NY. Once you have your chicks and get the care down to a routine, you can get a friend, or neighbor who is interested, maybe a reponsible teen... To care for them, as you would with any other animals in your care. Enjoy, and there is lots of information on these threads.
