Price for Older Hens

Thread Starter

I have a flock of 10, 2.5-3 year old layers.  I was thinking of selling off some of the flock to get new layers in.  How much should I price these gals or are they worth nothing based on their age?

Thanks, Sonja

Proud Mama Hen to 7 chickens , 4 ducks, 1 duck who thinks he's a chicken, a Guinea fowl, a Shetland pony,  3 sweet dogs, 2 cute puppies,  3 fluffy cats, 4 cute kiddos, and 1 AMAZING hubby (who puts up with all of my critters)!

Stewing hen buyers around here only pay $2 a hen.  Again, this is locale dependent and circumstance dependent.  What DOES bother me is people palming off near-spent hens as much younger, for top dollar, to unsuspecting, naive buyers.

I completely agree.  There's a longer story here.  If I do get rid of them for young blood, I was thinking free.  It's not fair to have someone pay for a hen that may not lay much longer.  Thank you!

I have three 3-year old hens laying 5-7 eggs each a week. Are you sure you want to get rid of yours? idunno.gif

I give mine away.

Just a suggestion...hens that no longer lay work very well as canned chicken if you have a pressure canner.

It all starts when you get a couple cute little chicks, then the next thing you know............

Thank you all for the advice.  This has been a finicky flock.  I love these birds, but I need to get some new blood in.
