My mother is a stay at home mom, and let me tell you, I'm glad she isn't off 'proving herself tot he feminists and being a super hero' because the ones that truly win are the mother's at home.  :)

You and me are so much alike...I am also a SAHM and I also work as a substitue teacher for the school district...I retired from full time work when my kids were born...went back to work at school district a few years ago and for the past year I have been building our small farm...My DH works out of town all week and is only home weekends so I do the farm work...I feel my children are much better individuals because I have been home with them all this time...and working at the school lets me see the difference in the kids form working moms and non...

It is quite frustrating. I feel guilty for not bringing in some income, but I feel good knowing that I am taking care of things at home and am there for my girls when they need me.  

 

ETA: Please tell me someone didn't actually say to you that stay at home moms don't work? 

Hey!!  Let's stop bashing mothers, whether stay at home or those that are employed outside the home.  Sometimes there isn't a whole lot of choice about whether a mother works or not.  I know any number of employed mothers and none of them are trying to "prove" themselves to feminists or anyone else. Somebody has to put groceries on the table. And some women go nuts if confined with toddlers all day.  Personally, I flunked mother school, so I took care not to be one.

I have no idea what a feminist is, and why it is considered a derogatory term anyway.  I am all for equal rights and equal pay for equal work. It wasn't long ago that women were lumped with "children and idiots" in legal codes and in the language of the law.  I remember reading about a husband and wife, both lawyers, who had a law practice in the great state of Texas in the 50's.  The female lawyer had to get her husband to sign all the legal documents because she, as a woman, could not  do so. In the eyes of the law, women, like idiots and children, were not considered to be competent.

SAHM.... Kinda. I work 4 hrs on tuesday and thursday while my oldest is in school, and my youngest hangs with Granny who lives with me...

Try this, Single SAHM. I wish I got paid 113 grand for my job. I do all the cooking, cleaning, animal care, shopping and work. Granny is disabled. The most she does is watch my youngest while I go to work 4 hours on those 2 days and I work 2.5 hours a nite/morning from 4 am to 6 am while the kids sleep. I refuse to work a full time job where I have to pay a day care to raise my kids for 9 hours a day. So I deliver papers and that allows me to pay the bills and be home where I need to be. Raising my family and taking care of the homestead. 

I would rather be a full time stay at home mom, and never have a "REAL JOB". Being a SAHM is a job all on its own.

I don't resent SAHM especially when there are three or more children to take care of; saves so much on daycare. 

I happen to resent one certain SAHM whose husband works 3 jobs to support his family (youngest of 2 kids is 7)....he also has to come home, mow (or shovel snow), do all the home repairs, run errands, help grocery shop, take the kids places and help with their cares, and also help with cleaning, laundry and dishes sometimes.

I just recently rejoined the work force after being a SAHM for almost 16 years. DH stuck his foot in his mouth but that is another story.

Loved it when I got a call from the census worker. She asked what I did. Told her I worked at on our farm/ranch while raising our kids. She got this tone in her voice when she said SAHM.

BOY did I have fun then.

Told her I was also listed as the maid, cook, babysitter, nurse, doctor, repair woman, vet tech, general laborer, heavy equipment operator, hazardous material removal specialist (son was in cloth diapers) and I went on for quite awhile. She still said we couldn't list those and said I would be listed as a SAHM.

Told her she was a PITB.

I had fun arguing with her over that and another issue. Never called me again. 

My mother was a RN (and did various other jobs before) and worked at the hospital and then the correctional institution after she got married at twenty-five (she met my father at the hospital, he was a patient there) since Pop's a correctional officer. Boy how she hated it there and I understand why from the stories she's told me. She stayed there a couple of years and she stopped "working" at a "real job" when she decided to have children, she was thirty-one by the time she had my brother, then four years later I came along.

I'd say she's used her nursing skills and medical knowledge to great advantage when needed on us over the years, however, some seem to have the idea that when one doesn't work "officially" anymore, then all knowledge and skills are thrown out the window and forgotten. Not very long ago, somebody who works at the doctor's office that my mother knew (and the person isn't very bright herself) commented about how "all that wasted" my mother's education and training was.   We didn't really say anything to that, just kinda laughed. I should've said, "Well, there's several people who are "in" the medical profession now who have no business doing so. You're starting to provide a prime example of why". 

My mother couldn't go back to work anyway since after she had me she's had various medical problems, even more so from falling a few days after having adhesions removed. Good grief, and she's still managed to take care of all of us.
