First broody today.... set four eggs under her :) - Page 2

I also have a broody hen, found her sitting on a clutch of old eggs from another hen but unfortunately the eggs are not fertile. I removed the old eggs and put fresh fertile eggs under and she pushed them under her. This is her first time going broody so I hope she sticks with it. I have another hen that refuses to lay in the nest boxes and free ranges all day, I have to hunt all over for her eggs and when I finally find them there are 10-14 eggs. These eggs are not fertile and I know she will set on them when she is ready, so I keep taking them when I find them.

How exciting!

I've had my second run with broody Silkies and it has been really interesting! First time mothers, they stuck with eggs (all 4 went broody and they took turns, the first time it was just one) BUT...once the eggs starting hatching, they could not be bothered with the chicks---only one of them has been a good chick mom. The plus side is that they didn't protest at all when I started taking the chicks one by one & putting them in the warm brooder. Every single one has been very healthy, and no problems. After everyone was hatched I gave them back to the "good mom" Now I have one mom who has 9 chicks!

Sounds like you know what you're doing---but I was glad I had a temporary brooder set up ready to go just in case!

Keep us all posted on the events.

wow! sounds like your having a good time on that, sounds like she is a good mamma too. Lucky you did it sounds like it would be a good idea to have one set up  just in the case that something happens I don't have one but right now but if I need to it wont take to much work to get is ready. Well I did have some problems but I seem to be getting that all figured out-- the only thing I need to figure out is my rooster he has just been getting worse and worse with attacking me and I don't know where to go with him!

BOTH OF THE CHICKIES ARE HATCHED AND DRIEDya.gif. Momma turkey will be allowed to raise them for a lil bit. I wanted to raise them my self but she started freaking when I took them. I felt bad and gave her her chickies back. I will only let her raise the chicks for a week or two.
