Hey, I was thinking of hatching out some chicks from a black australorp hen and NH Rooster and was wondering what they would be? I was also wondering if there would be any way I could distinguish the sex by color? Thanks!!

I can't help you with breeds, as I am just starting on the genetics of chickens, but my guess is a mix of the two with either a codominance, both colors appear, or incomplete dominance, they mix to make a new color. But for distinguishing the sex of baby chicks, I have a way that works 90% of the time. When they are a few days old, take one and carefully hold it in your hand. Open one wing so it is outstreched, and look at the small feathers at the tips. If it seems like there are two layers of feathers, then it is a female, if there is only one, then male. This is how most large breeders sex their chickens as it is almost always right. I hope this helps.

Happy family of 1 horse, 2 ponies, 3 dogs, 13 cats, 1 rat, 1 prairie dog, 1 fox, 1 fish, and 39 chickens ( Many different breeds, and two mothers to be. Hoping they hatch out their new families in a few weeks. I have some D'uccle roosters for sale if anyone would like to purchase them. I will upload some pictures soon, so feel free to take a gander and pick out a few hunks for your flock.)...
