Newborn chick/Should I put it down? Pls help! - Page 2

OMG it definitely looks like unabsorbed yolk.  Your going to need to cover it because what will happen is the chicks will claw it with there little toes nail and break it open, if they do that your chick will not survive and if they don't claw at it the rest of the yolk could fall out and again, it will soon die.  I have had a chick do this only my dog accidently step on him and sliced him opened and sure enough his yolk came all they way out,  I put some neosprin on a bandaid to help keep it covered until it was able to go back up and close on it's own.  it took days because like I said my chick had a open wound so the wound had to close up first then the vent closed up... But if it breaks opened it's going to be over for the little chick... why are you helping them on day 22 give them at least 5 days after the due date...

I'm not sure if you separate them and leave it uncovered if it will dry up and fall up.  I would think perhaps adventurally it would, I have never tried it.  the second picture it looks like the sac maybe opened, You can see a water of yolk coming out.  YEK not good....

This was actually one I did not help. The helped ones are doing fine. Just weird.

Not aware how long they can stay in the egg once pipped before problems can arise, maybe someone out there can tell me?

They can stay in the shell for sometime, I wouldn't worry about them unless it's been a day or two and the peeping is getting lower and lower.  Usually when one chick is out, it gets all the other chicks going and they seem to exscape quickly.  I have had one peep for 3 days before he decided to join the others..  Some take longer, some are in a rush to get the heck out of there..The rule of thumb is wait at least 5 days after the due date before interveeing because of those late comers..  But you have a different case going now..  OMG..

I also think it's an unabsorbed yolk. Personally, I'd seperate it into the other incubator you have and keep the humidity above 85%. You definately don't want the other chicks picking and trampling all over the exposed area. I'm always for giving them a chance especially since these ones seem active and aren't bleeding much. I hope all goes well and some other knowledgable board members can help. Please keep us updated. Thinking positive...

Give him an stuffed animal or something he can cuddle with, yes chickens hate to be alone.  I'm not sure about it drying up and closing, if it does that's supper. I guess as long as he is still moving and chirping and what not, I think he'll be OK..  I thought you said there was two of them like this?  if so give him that friend...

that is great to know that it has dried up, I wasn't sure about that because I have never just left it opened to do so, but that is great.  I will use that for future reference if ever I come to that type of situation.. 

So good to hear! I'd just leave it alone and let it heal. Hopefully the chick will be able to drink and eat a little once you put him/her in the brooder. If you have a feed store nearby I'd look into getting some Vetericyn. It's a spray on anti-microbial. I've used it on my chickens and my dog when he was attacked by a mysterious predator and their wounds healed up amazingly fast. It should definately help in preventing infection to the wound which would probably be a death sentence. Always handy stuff to have around. One of the feed store girls said she even uses it on herself and her daughter. LOL. Well, you've got a little fighter and I'm rooting for him/her
