Please be realistic..small cuts scab over in a few days, larger or deeper ones can take weeks...bones months...etc

Every hit a horse makes wont hit, and a horse cant dodge every attack.

All About a Horse

Things to know

A harem, or band/herd, consists of one stallion and a few mares. There is only one stallion in a band, and any colts will be kicked out at two years old. The stallion mates with all the mares during the spring, when they're in heat. Next spring, one year later, they will give birth to one foal, rarely twins. A few days after giving birth they will go into heat again and sometimes a mare will be in heat for the first of summer.

A lone mare is a mare or female yearling that does not belong to a herd, but in the spring there will be very few of these, because stallions fight over mares constantly. Mares are like prized possessions or trophies to a stallion.

A bachelor is a stallion or male yearling that has not yet started a herd of his own. Bachelors will sometimes join together to steal mares from herds or will walk alone, occasionally harassing band stallions until they manage to get a mare of their own.

A band stallion is the one and only stallion in a herd. He steals mares from other bands and mates with all the mares in the spring. He is also the one responsible for protecting his herd against predators and rival stallions. If a band stallion dies, the mares may either split up or the stallion's eldest son may take over the herd.

A lead mare is a mare that is chosen by the lead stallion to lead the herd to watering holes, and also takes the lead when they migrate to the canyon/valley each year in the fall. She is bred by the band stallion.

A foal is a baby horse of either gender from 0-12 months old.

A yearling is a horse of either gender from the ages 1-3 years. Colts are kicked out at the age of two, and fillies may either leave to find a herd of their own, or stay.

A stallion is a male horse over the age of three years and a mare is a female horse over the age of three years.

Courting is a more gentle way to bring a mare into a herd, or to tell them where to go if a stallion is moving the band to a new location. A stallion will nudge the mare in the direction he wants her to go.

Snaking is a harsh way of getting a mare into a herd, and is how stallions steal mares from other stallions. The band stallion will lower his head and flatten his ears, galloping behind the mare, chasing her into his herd. If a mare is being snaked, there is little she can do to resist the stallion before being forced to go where he wants you to.

If a mare is stolen from another herd, she may NOT sneak back to her old harem.


A Horse's Life



First few hours -
Horses can be up and about within a half an hour after birth. They need to be quick and agile very soon after birth because in the wild predators would love a little foal for dinner. As soon as a foal is born its dam (mother) licks it to dry its wet coat and stimulate blood flow.

First weeks -
In the first weeks of a horses life its baby central incisor teeth come through its gums. Their second, third and fourth premolars also come through in their second week of life. They also start learning how to handle their long, out-of-proportion legs. At this time the foal is still suckling. It will stay very close to its dam because in the wild she would be its only source of food and defence.

1 month to 6 weeks -
During this time of a horses life its baby intermediate incisors come through and it starts getting more adventurous and bold, going farther and farther from its dam. The foal is still dependant on its dam for food and protection but as it reaches the two to three month area of its life it no longer will hide behind its dam or cling to her side.

6 months to 9 months -
As a horse reaches the 6 to 9 month period of life their corner incisors break through their gums. Their permanent wolf teeth should start to push through. Some horses never get these teeth, but if they do then they get them within the period of 6 months to 3 years. They also get weaned at around 6 months. At first the mare will gently push her foal away when he comes to suckle, but as time goes on she will get tougher and harsher with her rejecting. Eventually, if the foal does not get its dam’s message she will begin kicking it and biting it and then, if the foal still doesn’t understand the foal could possibly die during this. This may sound harsh but all foals have to grow up sometime and often separating the mare and her foal is the kindest way to do it.



1 year to 2 years -
Not a lot happens in this time of a young horses life. A young horse will get its second molar and it will continue growing bigger and slowly start filling out but besides that there are hardly any changes.

2 years to 3 years -
Now a whole lot starts happening! This is one of the busiest times in a horses life. As they turn 2 they start getting their permanent central incisors, their second premolar and their third premolar. When they reach the 2 and a half marker they become ready to breed which means that all the colts and the fillies must be separated. By the end of this season they will also start getting their third molar and their fourth premolar.

3 years to 4 years -
As the young horse turns 3 it should start getting its intermediate and corner incisors. They also might get their canines, but some horses never do. They now will look just like an adult horse and will have reached their full height. When a young horse turns 4 they are no longer classified as a “colt” or “filly” but now as “stallion”, “gelding” or “mare”.



The rest of a horses life -
Whatever happens to them, most horses will be in their prime of life at around 10 to 12 years of age and die around the age of 20 to 30 years. Horses that have lived hard lives will die sooner then that since they have their prime at around 3 to 6 years of age, but horses that had gentle lives as stud stallions, brood mares or just simply horses can be known to live up to 40 or even 50 years, but these horses are few and far between. But what age the horse dies at doesn’t matter! It’s what they did before they died that does! If they had an unhappy, traumatized life then it was not a good horses life. But if they had an enjoyable, free and pleasure filled horses life doing what they were good at then it was most worthwhile!

Star- A Star is a diamond shaped white patch of hair that appears on a horse’s forehead. Take note though – Just because it’s called a “star” doesn’t mean it’s shaped like one. A star can also be the shape of a circle, oval or square.

Stripe - A long white line of hair about 2 centimetres thick that runs from a horse’s forehead to its muzzle.

Blaze - A long white line of hair about 6 centimetres thick that runs from the horse’s forehead to its muzzle.

Bald Face - A huge patch of white hair that covers most of the horse’s face.

Snip - A small white snippet of hair that appears on a horse’s nose between its two nostrils.

Interrupted Stripe - This is just like a stripe except that it has small patches of the horse’s body colour running between the white line of the stripe.

Leg Markings

Stocking - A stocking is a big patch of white that goes from a horse’s hoof to its knee on its leg.

Sock - A sock is a small patch of white that goes from a horse’s hoof to just above its fetlock.

Half-Pastern - A half-pastern is a small rim of white that goes from a horse’s hoof to halfway up its pastern.

Crown - A crown is a little liner of white that goes from a horse’s hoof to just above its coronet.

Coronet - A tiny ring of white that goes just around the top of a horse’s hoof.


Other Markings

Flesh Markings - Flesh markings are random white splotches that are found underneath a horse’s belly, normally around the girth area.

Zebra Markings - Black slashes of hair that appear on a horse’s hind legs.

Dorsal Stripe - A tick black stripe that runs from the top of a horse’s tail to its withers
