Roost bars - 2x2s or sideways 2x4s?

I know people use both but I'm wondering which one you have had success with. My gals will live in an insulated but unheated (apart from extesion cord lamp) coop in Minnesota winters,

Thanks for any advice!

I couldn't decide either so used 2x3's on their sides. From what I've read in cold climates the 2x4's on their sides so they can cover their feet work best.

I'm not an expert,"ex" is a has been and a "spurt" is a drip under pressure!
