I don't know anybody who has them.  I've heard, though, that you can have them if you have the proper permits.  They are rare and I suspect that also means they are quite expensive. As far as I know they are still on the endangered list, so I hope that if you get some, you are very serious about supporting the breed and doing what is best for them.

I have Nenes :)

They are still on the endandgered species list and are pretty hard to find. The main reason you have to have the right paperwork.

The person that owns them has to have the Federal transfer papers from the person they got them from. The big catcher.. Since they are endangered and under the Migratory birds act you not only have to get the transfer papers and then the permit if you want to sell them, but if you buy them out of state you both have to get the endangered species permits. So bascially you have to get them from someone who got them legally from someone else and then try to find them within your state or go through other paperwork....

They are winter layers here so some time between Dec-March I should have babies.

The permitting process is not insurmountable. It just takes patience to wade through the red tape. Nenes are endangered in the wild, but are fairly common in captivity. I know breeders who have a glut of them, and don't hatch any eggs some years, because they don't always sell well because people are scared off by the thought of going through the permit process. It's too bad, because they are really nice birds to work with.
