So hubby and I just build the Purina hen house design someone else posted the link to. It's Huge! A lot bigger than we need for our tiny backyard, but I guess they won't be able to compain about tight quarters! LOL! I need to get some pics, then I'll get them uploaded.
Still need to make the perches, some finishing touches, and paint, but 2 chickens moved in last night and they seem to like it!

I was looking at that plan. Still trying to decide if we should attempt to make one with our limited carpentry experience or if we should just buy one.

It wasn't too hard to make. My hubby is pretty handy so there were a couple of things he did that I don't know if I would've know to do, but if you have the tools to make one I would say try that first! It's so much cheaper, especially if you have some scraps and stuff laying around. It is pretty big though, it says it could handle up to 8 full size birds, but I think it could really take up to 12. 8 would be very comfortable with lots of space. I think we've decided we are going to have 6. Right now we have 2 grown, and 2 chicks (3 wks old- still in a cage in the house).

The Purina coop is quite straightforward. Basic frame depending upon the sheet goods for structural integrity. I have two of them.

Give it a try.

I think I am going to go for the Purina Coop with an attached run for my 6 chicks. Did you go with the size on the plan or did you modify it? I was afraid it wouldn't be big enough, but maybe it will. How long did it take to build? I am just full of questions! Thanks.

You can ask all the questions you want! I was full of questions before we decided on one!
I have some pics in need to post of it. It's done now except for paint and shingles.
My hubby and I built it over a week, working on it almost every evening and most of Sunday, but it wasn't too hard. We did the exact plans except that I moved the door to the side so that when we build a run it can be off the side and the nest box would be acessible without going into the run.
So, yes imo it is plenty big enough for six chickens, they'll have room to spare in there! Plans say it can fit up to 8 full size, but it is MUCH bigger than some of the coops we were looking at buying and they said they'd fit 8.
Hope this answers your questions. Let me know if you have others.

So here are a few pics. This was right after it was built and moved to the backyard. The unpainted 2x4s coming out of the sides were for hubby and neighboor to carry it to the backyard, they'll be removed.
We don't have the ramp on in the pic, but as you can see we moved the location of the door, other than that everything else is done to spec.
We are currently painting, but our two grown girls love this new home!

Thanks for your answers. In looking at the coop with the little boy in the picture, I think it will be plenty large enough for the 6 chickens! I do like that you moved the nesting box and I, too, plan to add a run, so I will probably be doing about what you have done. Thanks again!

Big? Room for 12? My brooder has the same footprint as that coop. Where's the ventilation, windows for light inside?, That design looks like a closed up box to me. It doesn't look like it would be a healthy place for chickens, especially in the winter when they may be cooped up for awhile.

The ventilation on the Purina coop it at the top where the front and rear walls meet the roof. It is open front to back. The plan is designed to have a skylight.
