So here's the story. Neighbors called about the unfortunate roo I ended up with after buying him as a pullet. I am new to chickens and didn't know I had been dooped (he was a silkie:) until I heard the crows. Yesterday I FINALLY sold him, after 3 months of postings etc....

Anyhow, I came home from selling him to a business card from the health dept. After calling him I was informed that I had been mis informed about my city ordinances and I have 5 business days to move my flock. The man from the health dept seemed smug when I asked if there was any way I could get a permit or perhaps have the ordinance revised. He told me if 'he had any say in it that chickens would stay where they belong, in the country'.

After looking up some info, I will be contacting the alderperson in my area, but he will be derferring back to health dept about sanitation codes etc....ANY help fighting this would be GREATLY appreciated as I'm bound and determined to keep my 5 girls....what to do?!

Get them to send you the ordinances in WRITING. When I did a quick google search, it appeared that last year it became legal to own chickens in Milwaukee. You do appear to need a permit (I'm guessing you did not get one), but chickens themselves do not appear illegal if you go through the proper channels. Good luck!

Neighbors can be such pain in the ***** sometimes! Buy some property out in the country where neighbors are a thing of the past.

You might check with your local planning and zoning department, code enforcement, or animal control. They should be able to help you with city code questions. Maybe code enforcement or animal control for questions about any permits required. You can usually find their contact information on your local city web page. You might be able to submit a variance request (this process usually starts through the planning and zoning department in my city and goes to a committee or city council for a vote).

Check that the ordinance is actually acording to what your health inspector said. reason i say this is because here in chicago even though we are allowed to keep chickens, not all inspectors know about that, so we have to actually aducate them on the issue. Then if it is actually the case, bring it up to alderman.

I'm calling the alderpersons in the am as I finally got their contact info.....it is legal to keep chickens in the CITY of Milwaukee, not in the suburb of South Milwaukee. I work for animal control and we have no info on record about ordinances and I'm having a hard time finding it online....but the fight continues!

Will Allen. Google him. He has that urban agriculture thing right in Milwaukee. Swing by and see what he can advise. Perhaps a call from his office might get that health guy shaking.
