Chicken died yesterday suddenly

My little chicken died suddenly yesterday. She flapped her wings really hard 2 times, flung her head back, and spit up, then she collapsed. Her heart was still beating very faintly for about 15 minutes then it stopped. Her whole body was warm, but limp the entire time. After tying CPR and many other things, her little heart stopped and her body went stiff, all except for her neck which is still very limp.

I thought she might have choked, but a friend said that she might have gotten bitten or stung, or maybe eaten something poisonous. I know it is too late now, but I want to know if anybody else has experienced something similar or might know what happened.

Background on chicken:

She was a Black Old English Bantam. We bought her from the Pacific Poultry Breeders show on Jan 28, 2012. They told us she was 1 year old. She didn't start laying eggs until 2 weeks ago. She was very tame, beautiful, smart, and spoiled. She slept in my sons room, and if left alone would scream until he picked her up again.

Could she have had a heart attack? Are there many snakes in your area? Any potentially posionious plants she could have eaten?

We similarly lost a chicken suddenly on Sunday, and the preliminary necropsy indicates a hepatic (liver) rupture.  She was limping early in the day; we moved her in and she was calm and resting a few hours until suddenly she started flapping crazily.  When my son picked her up, she looked up at him then just went limp.  That would have been the rupture.  There are so many possibilities.  If you don't already have a resource, go to the BYC home page and search for free necropsy in [your state].  Even though it's too late to find out about this hen, you can have the information ready in case you lose another, under any circumstance.  Always helps us to know!  Sorry for your loss.  sad.png

Hi, I removed all of our dangerous plants before getting chickens, but we do have lots of black widows.
