Naked Neck Project. Please help with genetics

Thread Starter

I am planning on taking my turken and breeding her to my French Black Copper Maran rooster. What I need to know is : Do the chicks that hatch out carry the gene from the turken and have featherless necks? I hope so, or this project will never work.

Thanks in advance

They will not all be naked necks. You have a 50/50 chance of getting NN.

The naked neck gene is incompletely dominant. Birds with one copy of the gene will display a "bowtie" of feathers on the neck, but be otherwise featherless there. Birds with two copies of the gene will lack the "bowtie." If your naked neck hen lacks the "bowtie" then she has two copies of the NN gene, and all her offspring with the Marans roo will have naked necks with "bowties."

Thats what I did wrong, I should have found one without a bowtie.  Does yours have a bowtie boykin?  Lets see a picture of her..  :D

She does have a bowtie unfortunately. Does this mean half her chicks will be naked necks? Or at least have the bowtie?

I will see if I can find a picture. I know I have one of her when she was a chick but I will see if I can find an adult picture.

I will see if I can find a picture. I know I have one of her when she was a chick but I will see if I can find an adult picture.

From what I understood, the Naked Neck breed (capitalized) should not have a bowtie. You may have a chicken showing a naked neck, but that is the result of just the naked neck gene, and a naked neck isn't all that's required to fulfill the breed description for Naked Neck chickens. It's like saying that Silkie chickens have silkie feathers, but having silkie feathers is not enough to call the chicken a Silkie.

What you're starting with, then, is a chicken with one copy of the naked neck gene. Half of her offspring will inherit her naked neck gene, the other half will not. If you breed her to a Marans roo, that means half of the offspring will have a bowtie, and the other half will have fully-feathered necks. If you're trying to breed a dark egg layer with a naked neck, you can still start off with your hen, but just realize that you'll be using only half of the offspring to breed further. If you breed the F1 together, 25% should have naked necks WITHOUT the bowtie, and then you can use one of them to breed back with Marans.

What was your goal/intention with this breeding? Is this a terminal cross (i.e. you're not breeding the offspring further), or are you trying to start a "project breed"?

Thanks, That makes sense. I appreciate all of yall's help. This was sort-of a fun project breed for me. I had the marans rooster and a marans hen. I threw in some easter eggers in the mix too. I then had the turken so put her in the pen also. I was originally going to sell French Black Copper Maran hatching eggs. Then I decided I would also offer some of the easter eggers eggs to the buyers of the FCBM hatching eggs as a bonus. Then figured it wouldn't hurt to include turkens that laid dark colored eggs. My turken came from a hatchery so that probably explains the bow-tie

Ah, so you weren't planning to breed the offspring further? Dang, I was all excited at the idea of laying out a breeding plan for you.
