Can I tell the gender of my Bantams by their feathers?

Thread Starter

My mom grew up on a farm, and has seen many, many chicks hatch.  She says that the chicks with the little scruffy feathers on the top will be roosters.  Is she right, or does that happen to all chickens, even if they are male/female?  I am new to raising chickens, so this will also help in the future!  I can supply picture if needed.thumbsup.gif

Hey everyone!  I want to thank you for helping me out!  Would you please do me a favor and follow me so if I have any more questions, you could help me by answering them?  Thank you guys!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan big_smile.png

I have not heard of this before. Try sexing some and marking them so that you can see if you are right.

Home of the world's cutest dachshund, one crazy blue heeler, two cats,
one fat pony, and many (but not too many!) chickens

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?
