Today I had to put up a hanging waterer because the chicks constantly get bedding into the water from all their scratching. Then it took forever for them to figure out it had water in it. They were pretty intimidated by the size of the container. Has anyone else had this problem?
 
i haven't hung mine up yet, but i'm going to. they get so much pine shavings in it that the shavings absorb the water & they have nothing to drink. little mess makers
 
they are..they are also trying to mimic dustbathing. Thats really funny to see. Its amazing how they are just bred to know and do instinctively the same things the older hens do

That's very true!
To fix that problem, we put the water bowl in an area where there was no bedding, as we only get a couple of new chicks once every two years it's not really been a pressing issue to get a hanging waterer.
Dust bathing starts early. We used to put the chicks out when they were a couple of weeks old, and they'd be at it under the pumpkin leaves. :lol:
 
I put ours on long blocks that were cut for something or other, so it is above the shavings, but the little ones can jump up onto the blocks that extend out from under the waterer to get at the water. We still get shavings, but not as much. And I still change the water twice a day.

I had the small chick waterer but it really was too small by the time they were 3 weeks. They are growing SO Fast! So I got a regular size one. Both keep getting clogged with the pine shavings!! I did not know what to do! I did not want me chicks to get dehydrated!! I tried hanging it but it did not work since the brooder is just a large box with a homemade top! I am so glad I saw your advice! I am going to try the blocks I cannot believe I did not think of it myself! THANK YOU SweetSilver!!
 
I from day one put mine on a two by four and than eventually a brick than two bricks than hung it up. helped a bit but they still got dirt in it lol
