OMG! Swelling on underside of duckie's bill~

I come home from a five day trip, and discover Gertrude my Mallard Duck has a swelling on the underside of her bill. It's hot and squisy, and is about the size of a marble. She's just under a year old. She's quacking fine, and wandering around. And she's eating and drinking. I don't have a vet, so I'd need a treatment option! I'll try to get a better pic soon! I've also noticed she's rather... poopy. She's going about every minute or two. She never ever pooped on me before, but she has now, while I was holding her.

Sounds like she has an infection.  It might be wise to start giving her antibiotics.  See if you can get someone to gently hold her head up so you can take a photo of the underside of her bill.

See if you can get a response as well from the Emergency forum.

You may need to lance the swelling, then you would need to be diligent in keeping the wound clean, and medicating it.

What antibiotics? Just from the feed store?

Yes, feed stores usually carry something.  I have not had to treat my ducks so far.  Try asking on the Emergency forum about what kind of antibiotic might be best, or let us hope that someone more familiar with that can weigh in here.

So sorry your duck is having troubles!  In the meantime, vitamins and some apple cider vinegar in her water (a tablespoon per quart of water) may give her a general boost.

Someone else is having some duck health issues and he found some aureomycin in crumbles to give his duck.

All righty! I finally got Gert used to me again. She was very proud to pose for photos. She did very well. Here are four photos of the swelling. It's the dark spot on the base of her bill. I can't do it any brighter right now, because my dad is asleep and Gertrude is terrified of flashlights.

I have seen the aureomycin on line but don't remember who had it, but you may call the feed stores where you live and someone might have it. Don' just hope it will go away if it becomes stemic it could kill her. Really hard to see anything in the photos. She sure is a cutie hope you can find something to help her.  fl.gif

It could be an infection or the beginning of an abscess. Make her as comfy as possible and just monitor her . If it gets worse, take her to a vet.

I think Gertrude will be fine ! Enjoy her she's a beauty! smile.png
