A Dog For Me And My Flock

I lost my dog a while back after 14 years of faithful companionship. She was a good one that kept the property free of vermin and other dogs. My wife and I have finally decided to start looking for another. Ive researched herding and guardian dogs and I think Ive decided on the Border Collie. We were also considering a Blue Heeler or a mix between the two. Has anyone here have any experience with these dogs. Good or bad I'd like to hear it.  Or does anyone have a similar breed that I may be interested in researching.

7 Australorps, 6 Buff Orpingtons, 1 production red, 1 young bared rock roo, 1 pair of Old English Game Bantams, 4 bantam hens, 4 Freakin' cats,  (RIP Cookie) best dog ever, 1 dog sky(smartsmartsmart), and a variety of new chicks.

My neighbor has a heeler and its great for cows but he sure doesn't like anything else. Whatever you get be sure to get a young puppy so you can train it.

coming from a working breed they need a lot of exercise..

The difference between pets and pests is only on which side of the fence they're standing... keep your animals in your own property.

GP if you want a guardian dog to stay with them.i don't think they work out well if you "play" with them.

I got a pup last night. Her daddy looks exactly like your dog. He is 14 years old and still sired a batch of pups. Her Mother is a beautiful border collie. I got to meet and play with them both. I even got to meet and play with her 2 year old brother. All very grounded intelligent dogs. Ill post pics of the little girl later this morning. She has a lot of Blue in her.

i was worried about my heelers because i had them before i got chickens.Kya was 5yo when i got my first chickens.one 4 month old buff got out of the pen and she got it.i showed her the dead chicken and said no,and that was it.they are so smart that they pick up quick what pleases you and that is all they want .

i am getting a new heeler pup soon.it should be born in the next few weeks.wee.gif

No name yet. Little girl is going to be raised with little chicks. They should get along just fine. They are just about the same age.  I know Ill have my hands full with this cross but I think it will be well worth the work. Her mom ad dad were so friendly. They didn't know me or my wife from jack, but they came running to use loving on use. One male dog from a previous litter was just as lovey. We were privileged  to have pick of the litter. she was the happiest and friendliest of the 6 pups. Turns out she was also the biggest, fattest little bear.
