Hi all,
Need help real quick. Just got our peeps in the mail today. This is our first time.. I have three heat lights in their box and I can't get it up to 95 degrees... I have read that you should not put them in the house, but would it really hurt to bring the box into the house for a few days till we can get through this winter blast???
Thanks for any help!!!

Molly

we have our in the house along with the ducks when they are real little. do u have a dome over your lights?

You can bring 'em in. Mine have been in my spare room for 5+ weeks. Are you measuring right under the light at floor level? If it's near 90, it should be fine. I pay more attention to how the chicks act that the temp. Make sure they have a little room away from the lights to cool off. Did you already get them some food and water?

bring 'em in. no harm done & you can breathe easier. as the days pass you will figure your temp regulating out. when the weather cooperates, move 'em back out.
the only thing i would suggest is to make the warm spot, just that, a spot where they can go to warm up. if their entire environment is that temp, you run the risk of over-heating them. if they huddle under the light, they're too cold. if they are as afar away from the light as possible, they're too hot. if they sleep in a halo around the light, it's just right. it's a juggling act for the first few days.
good luck

Alot of folks including myself keep them in th house when they are new. I kept mine in a large metal dog crate at the edge of my kitchen, not near food or eating area. It worked great because my dogs and kittie and chicks could see each other and so they were accepted by my pets as well. Others have put them in basements spare bathrooms and such. When they got bigger out to the coop they went, enjoy you chicks they are addicting!

I am measuring at the floor, and it is only 73. I have their water and food a little away from the heat source. So they have enough area to get out of the lights and heat, but I still don't have an area where it is near warm enough, I don't think... They are moving around and eating and drinking.

I kept mine in the house for 2 weeks with one heat lamp and that was plenty. I was just using a rubbermaid tub so nothing fancy. If it started to get too cool, I just tossed a beach towel over 2/3 of it and that held in the heat well especially during the first week. Good luck!

Have you had the lamp on for 24 hours and do you have the top of the brooder partially covered to maintain heat? This may not apply to your set up, but the cover makes a difference and I recommend it even if you bring them inside. (You have to keep check on how they react still, of course.)
