So.... average...

I'm always scraping by in things, but not making some epically outstanding contribution.
In my year level, there are people who are:

- Awesome at sport. I suck so much at sport it's painful. Although I can usually take home a ribbon at athletics... in the 2nd or 3rd division.
- Brilliant musicians. I sing in the back row of the choir if that counts. idunno.gif
- Great at art. One of my best friends won our school's people's choice PP award for her photography! I like to draw, but "I can" and "I think I can" are two totally different things.
- Academic geniuses. The ones who are always winning awards in assembly. I haven't done so for a long time. I used to get 90-100s but now I'll be lucky if I get 80%.
- Writers. I write film scripts, but I'm getting the feeling that I'd probably be the only person who would pay to see any of my movies. Only one out of the ten or so so far contain any sort of a semblance to a love sub-plot. So select the people who don't like romance, fantasy, horror or crime... and you've got the practically three people on this planet who'd want to watch them. lol.png

I'm not even particularly charismatic or outgoing to make up for my lack of certain skills.
Any other people out there who aren't actually GOOD at anything in particular? How did you find out what that thing you can do is?

You keep trying. All this means is you have not found your passion yet. When you do, you will not be average.

Mother of 4, teacher of 2,  Raise chickens, ducks, geese, goats and YAY I finally have my dairy cow. I am addicted to finances and getting great deals. I enjoy sharing this with others, especially family. I actually enjoy doing taxes and have taught others to do their own.  I craft a little, sew a little, and read alot.  One upon a time people thought there was a chance I would be meek, quiet,...

I'll tell you what you're good at...writing. That was my passion for a season. I wrote all of the time, not for anyone else, just for me. I was brilliant (didn't matter what anyone else thought , I was writing for me). Then my passion changed, to animals, a few years later, gardening. I loved my animals like no one else would, and my gardens are still beautiful. I did start singing, always had, but oneday someone heard me, now I'm on the praise-n-worship at church.

If you really want to know your talents just think of what you love and go from there. Do it for you, and no one else. We are all talented, just maybe not discovered. The best thing you could ever do for yourself is to ask God to help you find these things out, He knows you better than you know yourself, He will answer.

I love jacks of all trades/people who can do a little bit of many things rather than just do one thing very well. They tend to call themselves "average". I call them interesting and enjoyable to be around.

Thank you folks. hugs.gif

gardening mama: You think I write well? Thanks. I would love to sell one of my scripts one day, but I know that none of them will ever really make the cut. It's not the sort of stuff that would make a blockbuster, for one thing many people I've shown them to can't really understand the technical parts!
Heather: I do have a passion, but that doesn't mean I'm any good at it. lol.png Gotta keep slogging on, I suppose, and it's not really an exciting interest like drama, animals or painting. It's a bit weird to be honest.

The people who are brilliant at what they do aren't always the ones who are successful. The world is full of "also rans" who made good, simply because they ran harder or longer than the ones who seemed more talented at the start. Did you know that Michael Jordan didn't make the basketball team the first time he tried out for it?

Or take Charles Shultz. His Peanuts cartoon strip was the most widely syndicated cartoon of its time, and has given us such iconic characters as Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Did you know that his drawings were rejected by his high school yearbook?

Not everyone discovers their "true calling" early in life. And, not everyone can be #1, But success isn't measured by how many people you "beat." I saw an interview with Jack Warden once. He was a very good actor, nominated several times for big awards, but only won one - an Emmy for his supporting role in Brian's Song, a film I'll bet you've never heard of. In the interview, Warden said,"I'm a character actor, not a leading man. The leading men get the big money, and the fame, but a few years from now, nobody wants to hire them. A character actor will always find work."

So you don't feel like a superstar. That's ok. Sometimes, the true MVP's can be the steady sloggers, the ones you can count on for a solid performance.clap.gif

Excuse me, your drawings are AMAZING. Seriously. If they were on a t-shirt, I would so totally want one.

I also consider you to be one of the funniest people on this entire website. Actually, Justbugged and I were planting raspberries whilst goofing off and talking about all the BYCers, and you came up. We both consider you to be a riot, and great fun to have around. And as far as feeling smart... Come on! I feel average every time I talk to you! So you're doing fine. thumbsup.gif

Thanks guys. hugs.gif
Bunnylady, interesting to hear about all those people. I personally love Peanuts! And okay, I'll admit, my two-line role in the year 9 musical was awesome. I didn't have to pull off any amazing solos and I still got a mention on the cast list. yesss.gif

Eenie, I honestly came up? How hilarious. lau.gif I can only draw one or two things really well. You haven't seen half of my ditched attempts, hiding in the back of my journals waiting to be discovered and giggled at. hide.gif
I've been getting pretty bad marks recently, with the exception of maybe chemistry, because hydrocarbons are fun. ya.gif My friend is also overtaking me at stocks because I seem to have a decided preference for mining and ... hydrocarbons, with strong exposure to Eurozone and China issues and now Spain is on board as well as Greece, Portugal and Ireland, after Germany's money and getting everyone's blood pressure up. Noooooo

Give yourself time. I didn't even start to grow into my self until I was in my thirties. If I am lucky I will see some of my passions bear some fruit before I am fifty. Maybe

The key is to just keep going and to not get down. Just keep trying. Keep learning. Keep expanding. I bet others don't see you as being average.

Honestly, I think you are amazing for being able to enjoy Chemistry; I'm pretty jealous.  I am an Environmental Biology major and I have to take several Chemistry courses.  I can't get into them at all, so I'm not doing well.  Also, I think if you are passionate about something, it is exciting no matter what it is.  It doesn't have to be another person's idea of an exciting activity like art or music, if you love it, go all in!  Try not to judge yourself by others, you are awesome because you are you!
