Maybe you can make a shield out of hardware clothe.

This is my second one of these bators. The first one had issues with the thermostat/heating element. It eventually overheated and shut down. The 25 eggs that I had in there were baked and the babie's were only days from hatching.... I was devostated.... Luckally I called my feedmill where I got my bator, told them what happened and they knew that I didn't have it for more than two months so they replaced it for me. The one I have now holds temp well, it's just that the element is too close for ducklings... A lesson learned the hard way.... So keep an eye on yours if there are really drastic temp changes there might be a problem with it. Good luck, I hope yours is ok.

I haven't had that happen, however I've had bantam chicks anxious to get out that stood up tall when chirping their little heads off (usually the first to hatch) and I noticed they got awfully close to that heating element.  It's definitely a fear I had, and I no longer use that incubator for hatching, although I keep it as a backup.  I agree that you may want to try to use some type of screen to make a shield.

my hubby works at home depot, I may ask him to see if he can get ahold of any styrafoam... maybe i can make an insert for it to put the top two or three inches taller.

That's a good idea, but make sure it fits tight.  Little Giants are so bad about holding in heat anyway, if the insert you make allows any gaps, it will be really hard to get it to hold temperature.   On the flip side, if the insert you make is able to seal better to the top and bottom pieces of the incubator, it could actually be an improvement.

Well if I can make an improvement in it then I will prob try to get a patton on it or get the royalties at least.... They obviously arn't thinking about the chicks/ducklings getting burned so someone has to do it... But my main goal is just to make it safer for my babie's!...smile.png

Yep - you could be onto something big!   It would definitely be useful to others here, myself included.  I just lack the patience to figure something out.

Thankfully the ducklings look as if their eyes are all ok. They all have their eyes open now... I was worried there for a while...

OMG!!! I was slightly worried about this myself. I have babies hatching out today in our LG and I am at work!!! This is our first time using an LG (bought it used recently) and I was thinking it was working out well. Now I'm seriously going to be freaking out while I sit here at work and PRAY that my babies hatching out are o.k. If anyone has any ideas about how to protect their little heads from the heating element I'll be listening...fl.gif
