Plus, because not to many people want roosters is exactly why they send them. I'm not saying it as a bad thing. I think that it is better to have them send cockerels with the order than for them to have to kill them as babies 'cause no one wants them. That way they will usually at least live to be older. Even if they end up being slaughtered and eaten. I think that as long as they lived a good life then that is better. I think that as long as they had good life it is not cruel to eat them. Now it is completely different when they are completely abused and miss treated JUST to be killed. That's just what I think though. I actually don't eat my chickens/ducks, but I still have respect for most who do.

I think its a little cruel  in the fact that some people really can not re home or bring them selves to eat extra roos .. when you order on line you often pay extra to specifically gt sexes .. And then you pay shipping.. If they are saying heres your Prize .. sometimes they are saying heres your order and now you figure out what to do with this extra roo .. Not always easy for some people .. and could put them in a sad place .. You dont pay the extra money to get a heart ache .. I Think I have decided that I have just placed and received my last live Chick Order .. Not because of the Roos but because one arrived dead and two passed away the next day .. I want to at least look them over before buying ..

??????????????  I don't get it?  My chicks were shipped in from a breeder not a hatchery...They all survived the trip. They were happy and healthy upon arrival. All the birds in feed stores ALSO come form hatcheries. The roos that don't get shipped out as "packing peanuts" get thrown into a grinder!  I see the grinder as a worse fate!  Is all of this "right"......that is anyone's opinion. We all know what they say about opinions!  My roos will grow and be happy....in a "chicken paradise"! They have a very secure coop to sleep in and time to range and be free.... to live like a chicken. When they are ready they wil be respectfully butchered.  After all animals with no apparent purpose ...really DO have a purpose!

If the roos make it for Sunday Dinner, they still got love and attention that the farms chickens never get. We got 6 mabie and one did not survive, if putting a roo in there wouyld have saved it's life so be it. We would love the roo and then given him to a friend on a farm who gives sanctuary to unwanted poultry :)
 

They should be focusing on inhumane conditions in eggeries and mass chicken meat producers, rather than the shipping process of baby chicks.  

  So many things wrong with the logic in this article that there is no good place to start.  I guess the writers are all vegetarians, and only advocate for purchasing pets within driving distance.  Or maybe car rides are too unnatural and inhumane too.

I ordered 24 chicks from McMurray Hatchery.  They gave me 1 surprise chick, plus decided to send a couple extra (packing peanuts I guess), anyway a total of 27 chicks were shipped, received and very active and healthy.  They are now 4 weeks old and seem to be just fine.  I am very happy with my dealings with McMurray Hatchery.  

i see in USA its common practice to ship day old in post

here in UK absolutly no Courior or the Postal Service will ship any form of live stock at all

so there must be a reason

places where shipping occurs is only where the breeder drives them to you themselves

and that costs the equivelent of atleast 10 UK priced day olds

i usually get mine driven over to me by the breeder [lovely lady]

although tomorrow i will br driving down myself to get some roosters am so excited

geting a Black Copper Maran, Cream Legbar, and a Lavander Aurucana.

That works IF there is a breeder nearby....where I am I couldn't get what I wanted within driving distance.  I got TRUE Araucanas, Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, and Lavender Orpingtons all in the same box!  I am glad the Post Office will ship day olds. Most of the stock around here are mutt breeds. My neighbors were shocked when they saw my beautiful birds!  They have already asked me about breeding them some chicks.
