Chicken Scared of new Bedding

Thread Starter

My husband and i inherited a 9 or 10 year old chicken when we bought our new house. The previous owner always used straw for her bedding and once our supply was out i switched to Pine shavings. The chicken appears scared of the new shavings and takes FOREVER to jump from her perch to the floor to eat when i feed her (sometimes i even pick her up and help her down), has anyone ever heard of a chicken being scared of new types of bedding?

Its not uncommon, my chickens are a bit weary of new bedding even if its the same as their old bedding... just fluffed up a bit. Give her a few days and she'll get used to it.

What Chicke Boo Boo said.

Chickens are creatures of habit and ANYthing new or different is suspicious until they get used to it.

I changed from a smallish waterer to a big ol' hunkin' 5 gallon waterer, and you'd have thunk it was a monster I just set down in the middle of the coop! Auugh! Killer plastic thing!

Buncha Outdoor PET chickens, ducks, two Toulouse ganders, and four turkeys. Plus 2 wiener dogs, some bunnies and a rescue cat which owns me. Oh. And a house silkie....
