What plants will chickens eat? - Page 2

I always have a LARGE amount of extra seeds from from what I have planted for my personal use as well as I have 3 other people that I do a 'seed swap' with when we have a lot of extra of one thing and need seeds of something else, so start up costs of buying seeds is not really an issue. I would only have to buy the seeds of maybe a few things that none of us have... like wheat and oats.

right now I have 'extra' seeds of beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, corn, cucumber, eggplant, onions, peas, peppers, pumpkin, radish, spinach, squash (both summer and winter types) tomato, and Zucchini.... I think I have the veggies covered big_smile.png. I also have blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberry plants they love the leftovers in my berry patch come fall!

Thanks everyone for the ideas!

And thanks for the warm welcome to BYC

Sounds good!

I am also planting a ton of winter squash and pumpkins and turnips.

I really don't eat them, but my chickens and sheep will LOVE them during the winter!

Cucumbers are also a big hit with the chickens!

Yea, we're planting a pretty big garden this year, so we will have lots of extras. And anyways, come summer people from church always have a bunch of veggies they are trying to get rid of, so there's plenty there. I do hope to start growing more grains and legumes though.

Hi there, I like this idea how can i do this without smelling the neighbours out. I live in a suburban block. I'm wanting to give them more to scratch on, so this sounds great. But I don't think i'm able to have an open compost heap. And are there things that I shouldn't put in the compost heap, if Im doing it just for the chickens?
