Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

When do they go on vacation? We've got eggs EVERYWHERE!

I am weak...I could no more butcher one of my laying hens, than I could butcher my dog. So I have a lady that takes my old layers. She loves my birds because they are so well behaved and they come to her when she calls them. I called her last weekend, but they are moving into a new location in the town of LaSalle.

I'll call her back in a few weeks and see if she's ready...she is very excited to get some new birds from me...And I like that she takes such good care of my older layers.

So...They are laying like crazy. I have my 4 original layers and my 6 replacement pullets. We're getting 5 to 10 eggs a day...and as a result my neighbors love my girls. As we all know, backyard chickens lay the best eggs ever.

My Welsumers lay such beautiful eggs...I am very happy with this new breed ( Well...New to me).

My grandparents had a farm outside of Bilings Montana...I learned at an early age about life on a farm and what happens to livestock.

My wife is a Farmer's Daughter and is the product of 4-H..again she understands better than I about the food cycle and life on a farm. When we were first dating she would tell about her favorite lamb ole G46 or her mean nasty steer that evil G20...I always wondered at the weird names that she had for her pet livestock, then it finally dawned on me that those were ear tag numbers. You don't name livestock...there is an eventual end for these animals. Enjoy them and take care of them...but they are livestock and they do serve a purpose.

I miss my "908" and "906" sheep. We did name the Ram-- Iron Jaw.
