First time chick mama

Our class eggs have finally hatched after 23 days.  I have 2 silkies (out of a dozen - half silkies and half mixed cochins/bantams) so far with 3 more pipping.  I haven't read even a fraction of the information out there, so any advice would be great.

I had a Hovabator (forced air) and auto egg turner.  We set them April 2nd.  chick 1.jpg

Awww, congratulations!!

Are you going to keep the babies?

I'm hatching eggs in my daughter's first grade class. Two weeks along tomorrow.

I also did a hatch for my son's preschool, and the kids were sooooooooo excited.

Yes, I am keeping them!!!  The kids are so excited!  Too bad they can only see pictures of the babies in the brooder from now on!

Aww jumpy.gif Lucky you, get to raise the chicks. I always seem to have a hen go broody around hatch week, so when the fluffy buts pop out, I give them to her......I have eggs in the bator hatching first week of May. Two more hens went broody today.........but I have decided that I'm gonna raise this clutch and have the fun. Good luck with you and your chicks !  heres a link that may help

Chickens are very addicting droolin.gif , everyone here is a chicken addict yippiechickie.gif, people may look at you weird when you tell them, but its way better to be addicted to chickens then all the other stuff out there.............

So, I only had the two hatch and I opened the other eggs out of curiosity.  2 other embryos...one underdeveloped, one fully developed but dead.  hit.gif

We love our two, though.  They are at home now in the brooder.  Kids want them back.  Next time, I'll use Chook's Chick cheat sheet recipe for hatching....which will be REAL soon (yes, chickens are my new addiction).

Oh, I love seeing a year ago, where I started loving chickens.  Many people think it's such a strange hobby, but I love them and all their quirkiness.  These two (or the first hatched) are the LOUDEST little cochins.  We've added some, lost some, butchered some, and are now hatching again.  This time, I added my broody hens.  :)
