How did I go so wrong, so quickly?

th.gif I was meticulous in all my preplanning, the reading, the notes, the researching. I thought I picked a great little flock of eggers out- nice, quiet, winter hardy, good producers and I put my orders in early.

I ordered: 2 Plymouth Barred Rock, 2 Lavender Orpingtons, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 EEs and 2 Black Copper Marans.

So far 6 chicks have arrived.

One was apparently mistaken. Not a Barred Plymouth Rock at all, thought it was a BSL and thus a pullet, now looking like a Roo.

Got two Lavender Orpingtons from a local breeder. Looking like those are both roos too. And the local breeder I've been calling for a week and a half for the Marans looks like he might not come through.

My town has an ordinance no roosters and I'm suppose to be sharing this bunch with my friend and she can't take roosters either. Looking like I might get lucky if I end up with three pullets

Unless they were sold to you as sexed pullets then roosters are a certainty when buying chicks. The big hatcheries employ vent sexers to discriminate male from female, but the smaller hatcheries and local breeders likely cannot do that so offer only "straight run" which means at least half roosters, maybe more, sometimes less.

The two EEs and two that were suppose to be Barred Plymouth Rocks were ordered sexed

I feel like I am in a similar situation...4 sexed pullets from TSC (1 rooster), 2 bantam cochins straight run (2 roosters) and 2 Old English Bantams from a friend (1 rooster)  That leaves me with 4 out of 8 chickens as roosters!  Not the odds I was hoping for!

Not-so-new to chickens with my first free-ranging flock of 12 started on 3/4/2012 - 2 White Leghorn, 2 Tetra Tint, 2 Buff Orpington, 2 bantam Buff Cochin, 4 bantam OEGB/Silkie mixes.  Hatched 8 bitties on 9/9/12 with 2 broody OEG hens.

Learning the hard way with a current flock of 6 - Lost 7 to predators and 1 bitty to an accident, gave away 6 chicks.

Yep!! I hatch for people from my stock & always for warn the customer that they will probably get half pullets & half cocks. I have no idea how you sex chicks.

I'm out of eggs. But I know where some brown ones are. I now raise big Ol' Honkin' Bob Whites & Layed back Coturnix. Pray For Rain In Texas!

I do a lot of hatching and usually get close to 50/50 male/female. I have around 120 eggs in the incubator right now and a coop full of juveniles. The male juveniles are going to a swap next weekend. I just can't keep them. I have 5 breeding males and that is all I need.
