How many chickens can I fit in an 8 by 8 coop. The back would be nest boxes and the sides would be roost bars stacked so they don't poop on each other at night. They would be completely free range during the day.

if chickens are free ranged during the day they need a minimum of 2 sq ft in the coop...so  8' x 8' = 64 sq ft  64 sq ft divided be 2 would be 32 so you could pretty easily fit 32 full size chicks in there or 64 bantams because bantams only need half the space a standard does

I trust the four square foot minimum per large fowl bird, myself, even if they are allowed to range freely.

16 chickens.

Remember, feeders and waterers use valuable real estate and will reduce the total number of available square footage for the chickens.

Buncha Outdoor PET chickens, ducks, two Toulouse ganders, and four turkeys. Plus 2 wiener dogs, some bunnies and a rescue cat which owns me. Oh. And a house silkie....
