How to get chicken laws changed in Shelby Township, MI

Oh my gosh. I'm the one who initially started this thread, and for some reason, I was not getting notifications that there had been new posts added! I've recently gone back to school, so I don't get on here as much as I'd like. I'd actually pretty much given up on having chickens since I never heard from anybody back when I first started this.

Did any of you get together yet? I would be happy to meet with somebody, anybody. I still do not have chickens, but definitely want to.

I guess about a year ago I spoke with Vikki P. Yes, you would think that since she won her case (eventually), that those of us in Shelby Twp. could have chickens based on her victory. She says that is not the case, and I don't remember what she said exactly, so do now want to misquote. But I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with property size or "grandfather" clause, etc. I think she said it would have to be on an individual basis, but to me that just seems off.

Let me know if anybody sees this and wants to get together. I know there are plenty of people in Shelby Twp. who already have chickens and are "under the radar" so to speak. And I know it is probably scary to want to get involved for fear of losing the chickens you have. But wouldn't it be nice if the worry was just gone? To me, it would be great to be able to "legally" own 4 or 5 hens for eggs without the hassle of going "commercial". Many communities are going that route, so why not us? Especially with what is going on in Detroit and the attempted comeback. They are now allowed to do backyard gardening/farming. I'm not sure about chickens.

Do you all realize that in Shelby Twp., growing a garden with vegetables is just as "illegal" as owning chickens? Those things are BOTH against Shelby Twp. ordinance. I don't see anybody chasing after vegetable gardeners! Just my two cents.

Shelby twp. Should be having discussions on chickens and the animal ordinances this year if this is something that you would like to change please come to there meetings if more people are involved we can change it

Something that may help is to get support from gardeners, since that's apparently illegal there too. I'd make a flyer listing the outdated and nonsense rules, state why they're wrong, state what towns near you allow the forbidden acts and haven't burst into flames for it, and list who to contact to ask them to change the laws. The more people they hear from, the more likely they'll change it. Sitting with the status quo is easy, so that's the default (non)action unless pushed for something different.

Who in here has had success with delivering some sort of information packet to your local municipality, when cited for an ordinance violation? I've got a good friend who was just asked this morning to remove her flock, because rats... Nevermind that the city/county pushed all the rats out of the hundred year old sewers this summer, with road construction. Anyway, she needs some good concise information to throw at them quickly. At least to try to buy her some time. I know someone out there is generous and would like to help my friend keep her flock. Does anyone have anything great that they would not mind passing along to a fellow chicken lover?
