3 week old chicks treats and grit?

Hi, i started giving my 3 week old chicks lettuce and shredded carrots, crickets and meal worms in small ammounts, i introduced grit in a little tube feeder i got for a dollar at WalMart(parakeet/bird grit) for a $1, they ignored it for two days and when i got home from work yesterday the 50ml tube was empty, filled it this am and they started downing it like crazy? is this ok? lettuce seems to be a favorite a little runny poops after but alls back to normal, they ate live worms(what a kick!) too and yogurt, don't worry not to much just very small ammounts

Currently we have a mix of RIRed, PBR, GoldenSL,and Amber White SL pullets.

Mine ate "grit" from the time they were maybe a week old (now 9 weeks old) . I dont buy grit I use sand from our yard. Yes they will eat alot but they eat what they need. And yes iceburg lettuce will give the runs. Mine LOVE mealworms and just about anything we eat. I give the chicks the scraps from our meals and they love it.

I'm glad you posted this!  I have a 3 week old RIR and I take it outside and let it roam with me in the dirt and all over the yard, and it eats the dirt and picks at a bit of dried grass left on the lawn from mowing.  Seems like it wants to taste and eat practically everything... For humans, we call it pica, but I've read a little bit about this, and I guess it's normal.  So THIS is why people who think that chickens are nasty say that they will eat anything!  I guess it's true.  I just want to know that my bird isn't gonna hurt herself by eating something...er... not edible for her.

thanks for the reply, I'm just worried that they are growing out of my brooder quickly and maybe downing the grit out of boredom, i give em treats to keep them  busy so far they seem happy curious and healthy

I would maybe just give them a little grit instead of filling the dish if you're concerned about too much

I cut a chunk of sod out of the lawn for a treat. It's a bumpy lawnmower ride around my place, but we all have our priorities.

I put the sod in upside down (grass down, dirt up)

What a hoot, they love it! and they get grit from it

oh....I start this when they are about 4-5 days old, and do it every 3 days or so until they can romp outside.
