Help 3 out of 4 are no longer!!!

I had 3 of the 4 chicks I got on Tuesday die with in the past to nights!! I dont get what is happening to them, they have fresh food and water and they know where it is located.  Is it possible that they can get to hot and die?? It has been over 60 at night and I kept the light on them cause it was a little breezy.  This is the first time this has happened and I have had about 5 different batches of chicks.  The "last of the mohicans" is acting fine and so where the others.  I really dont want him to die to.  I am getting chicks from the hatchery on tuesday.  I hope to have this figured out by the time they get here!!

What temperature are they being kept in?  How big of a container are they in?

I use a large tote and put the light at one side so the chicks can move away from the heat if they get to hot.

I just kept a close eye on the temp in the brooder because I did hear they could get too hot and it would be fatal.

Married, 1 son, I have a wonderful loving family, so that means my chickens get alot of love from us-well from me & my son mostly, but I like to pretend my husband loves it to! 1 collie dog, 2 Leghorns, 1 OEGB rooster, 5 Gold Comets,2 Dekalb Amberlinks, 2 Buff Brahma's, 2 Light Brahma's, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Col. Rock Cross, 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes hens & 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte Rooster.

Ive been watching the temp and it hasnt gotten to hot, is it possible that maybe the chicks just werent very strong? they were very tiny when i got them and the fourth one I do not think is going to pull through.  I have moved it into the house and have been giving it water through a dropper and tried yogurt but he just seems to get weaker.  This is the first time I have dealt with this.  I hope my new chicks are healthier and stronger.

I'm sorry you're going through this-- it is so hard to see them pass away. Sounds like they are just weak. How old are they, and what breed are they, Silkies?

They were about 5 -6 days old and they were cochins.  I didnt hatch these I got them from a breeder, but I dont think I will be getting anymore any time soon from them.

What is the temp?  So you have a thermometer in there?  How big is the brooder, do they have enough space to get away from the heatlamp if they want? It is VERY possible  to overheat and kill them.  It's also possible they got too cold. Were they huddled up under the lamp, or far as they can get away from it?  Temp  is important.  1st week you want 90 degrees.

Yes Jack I have a thermometer and it was around 92, when I checked it at night and during the day I turn the light off because here the humidity is about 80% and 85 degrees or higher during the day.

Like you said at first.  You have raised 5 groups of chicks.  So you probably have a good idea of what you are doing.  That's what makes it so odd.  I know when I have new chicks in the brooder.  I have them in the basement (You probably don't have a basement in TX) where I can keep them at a steady temp and climate.   Maybe because they're so little, just the slight variation in temp and humidity caused problems.  Good luck with your next group.
