Very New At This, But Love It...

Thread Starter

Hello,

My name is Aric,I live in Jurupa Valley, California.  I just purchased three Layers. I also have three dogs and two cats. My yard is double fenced, so the dogs are no problem, but the cats are a different story. Right now the chickens are housed in an chain linked 8x10 dog kennel. I already started putting chicken wire over the top. Then I will put a piece of plywood over the back side of that for shade.  I plan to lift the boxes off of the ground after I build them, right now they are on the ground, but that will change very soon.

I just sent for some Chicken Nipples for watering off of eBay, right now I'm using some old dog bowls, and will be going to the hardware store for other supplies later today.

I started with the chickens because of a conversation that I had with someone at church about my vegetable garden. We were talking about me being a new gardener when she said that she was not a gardener, but a farmer, because she only grows things that can be eaten, not flowers. I figured that the same went for me also, so I decided to go one step further and start bringing animals into the mix. After I get a few more chickens I will start bringing in pot belly pigs and goats.

I came to this website because I am very new to this, but I am already in love with it, and I know that I will need a lot of help.  I hope that you all are having as much fun as I am.

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?

Yup, yup, yup! Chickens are lots of fun! I'm a newbie who started last May. Soon my first birds will be 1 YO and this week a new batch of mail order chicks will join the menagerie. Gotta watch out for that chicken math!

Welcome to the BYC gang. You're gonna love it here. It is THE place for all things fowl.

Love, Linn B * * * Nesting with my perfect DH, Cee Cee (choc. lab), Belle (orange tabby), Rusty (fertilizer rabbit), 5 Australorp hens, 4 Lt. Brahma hens and The Count of Monte Cristo, (Monte) my roo. And new, this May nine girls -- a Cochin, a Cuckoo Maran, an Easter Egger, 2 Buckeyes, 3 black sex-link (but Brownie isn't black), and Nesco, my Roaster Oven hatchling. Sigh! Victim of Chicken Math!
