I'm picking up my babies this morning! *New baby pictures added!*

As soon as I put my youngest on the bus, I'm heading out to the breeder to pick up my little puff balls. My thinking is...one Silkie (he has dark blue or black) 2 Barred Rock (sweet and pretty good layers) 2 red Stars (I THINK he has babies, I know he has almost grown ones-I may have to wait for a finished hen house for them) 1 or 2 Buff Orps or Lavender Orps, and MAYBE a Japanese-they just Hatched on Monday. celebrate.gif

My husband and I have discussed our hen house, and he will be expanding it to fit up to 10 hens. There will be an exterior extension for a nesting box or 3 as well! I also have an old Great Dane sized Dogloo that I'll be putting in the pen and modifying for our needs.

I'm so excited I can hardly pack up my sons lunch. I hope I didn't pack him something silly like peanut butter and tuna...but you never know...lol.png

I have my pine litter, heating lamp, food trays, and water bottle. He sells Grow-gel, so I'll pick up some of that, along with the organic feed he feeds. Can anyone suggest anything else I may need?

I'm so excited my whole body is vibrating. wee.gif

Well, it sounds like you're well on your way to having a nice new home for the babies!  Congrats!  What size is your brooder for them?  You might want to make a small perch for them.  A tree branch works fine!  When we first got ours they loved to sit on the perch!

ya.gif  Congratulations on your chicks!   I agree with  RedBarnFarms, they need some where to roost at night.

I have a round tub (those big ones people put toys in) for a brooder. By next week we should have holes in the sides for a roost-and LORD do we have branches in the yard (My property is like a forest!) Maybe I'll find one that free stands-I'm sure my kids would love to do the search for it.

I have a heat lamp, but was wondering if my "Seed starter grow light" might be better. It's a long light, emits a nice amount of heat, and has it's own stand. I'm always afraid of heat lamps falling in. (I'm a special type of paranoid.)

I may try it, with a thermometer, when I can watch the temperature carefully.

Thanks!!!

No problem and you're welcome.  Yes those heat lamps can cause problems so I know you are well aware but just take extra care that the lamp is securely connected so that there will be no chance if it falling into the brooder.  I actually used zip ties on mine.  We have a weather station that shows both indoor and outdoor temps so I placed the outdoor temp. gauge  in the brooder and now i can always check the temp. in the brooder from the livingroom where the main unit sits, LOL Works great!

Yay!  Have so much fun!  One thing I read on red vs. white light is that the chicks will have a harder time sleeping with white light (no idea if this is true), but wanted to give you a heads up :)  big_smile.png

All I have used with mine is the white light (a standard, household 100 watt bulb) and the only one with problems sleeping at night is ME (the brooders are in my bedroom)...lol

Here is how I solved the light problem tho: I close my door at night, turn on a small electric heater & point it in the general direction of the brooder. After my room warms to about 75F or so I shut the lights out. They do their little chick pile thing & go to sleep. Takes about 5 min for them to quiet down after lights out.
