We had a beautiful sunset the other night, prime for theme 85. a calming sunset.

This is the view from the chicken yard, looking up over the woods:

And what do we do during such a calming sunset?

Well, we collect grit for the night:
85calmingsunsetdiana.jpg

We do some last-minute preening:
85calmingsunsetskua.jpg

We get our last drinks for the night:
85calmingsunsetdrinking.jpg
(This pic was too cool, I just had to share it! That's Freema in the corner, so it does have a chicken in it... lol.png )

And we settle down to roost:

A few days later, I was fortunate enough to spot 31. a chicken swarm and catch it on camera:

What were they swarming over?

A combination of scratch grains and older eggs, mixed in shell and all. smile.png

Boy, if the weather just gets a little cooler, I'll try to get at least a few more themes done before the end of the month!

After a 100 degree day yesterday, and the start of another similar day today, we finally got...

...RAIN!

1hensrain.jpg

This big storm blew through and the power's out, but it's been pouring rain since it started!

So, 1. what do hens do in the rain?

Well, they certainly aren't inclined to free-range.

1hensrain2.jpg

As a matter of fact, they only seem to want to huddle under cover.

1hensrain3.jpg

(If you knew these birds, especially Blizzy who is in this picture, you'd know this was out of character. That's how much rain we were getting in short order here.)

Alas, the rain has passed, and thus I went out a-hunting 16. the wettest beard.

Some were only a little wet.

Some were drenched.

16wettestbeardwynne.jpg

But I think we can all agree that the wettest beard belonged to Mako today. (And maybe even the stinkiest stink-eye... She's madder than--okay, I won't go there.)

I also caught 2. a broody glare while I was out there.

Which means that...
I'M HALF
WAY DONE!

A broody glare is number 50!!

I got a ton of pictures this time around, so brace yourself!

I caught 94. ZOMBIES.

94zombiekate.jpg

I caught 3. wattle action.

3wattleactiondebrajo.jpg

I even caught zombie wattle action!

94or3zombiewattleaction.jpg

Err... Yeah.

I tried my two close-up themes, too. The 23. close-ups on feathers turned out beautifully!

Wyandotte Ani's neck feathers:
23feathercloseupani.jpg

Wyandotte Raven's wing/shoulder feathers
23feathercloseupraven.jpg

Easter-egger Cressida's neck feathers:
23feathercloseupcressy.jpg

Easter-egger Merlin's wing/shoulder feathers:
23feathercloseupmerlin.jpg

Easter-egger Betty's beard:
23feathercloseupbetty.jpg

Red Sexlink Skua's back:
23feathercloseupskua.jpg

24. Close-ups on combs were alright, but... a little strange.

Rhode Island red Twisty's single comb:
24combcloseuptwisty.jpg

Sebright Amy's rose comb:
24combcloseupamy.jpg

Easter-egger Betty's pea comb:
24combcloseupbetty.jpg

Wandering around the chicken yard, here and there I spotted 74. lost feathers:

74lostfeathers2.jpg

74lostfeathers1.jpg

(I didn't think to check around the Guinea enclosure--I might revisit this theme later for that!)

You know that pose that footballers always do in pictures, with their one foot back like they're about to charge? That's why we call this the 14. SPORTS POSE:

14sportsposecressy.jpg

*PHEW* It was really hot when I took these pictures! It's getting harder and harder to go out in that heat...
