Buffy is our only Orpington. She is independent, lower on the pecking order, but big, fluffy and likes to cluck. She lays frequently when not broody. She's my only brooder so far that I have...

This is the view from the chicken yard, looking up over the woods:

And what do we do during such a calming sunset?
Well, we collect grit for the night:

We do some last-minute preening:

We get our last drinks for the night:

(This pic was too cool, I just had to share it! That's Freema in the corner, so it does have a chicken in it...
)And we settle down to roost:

A few days later, I was fortunate enough to spot 31. a chicken swarm and catch it on camera:

What were they swarming over?
A combination of scratch grains and older eggs, mixed in shell and all.

Boy, if the weather just gets a little cooler, I'll try to get at least a few more themes done before the end of the month!

...RAIN!

This big storm blew through and the power's out, but it's been pouring rain since it started!
So, 1. what do hens do in the rain?
Well, they certainly aren't inclined to free-range.

As a matter of fact, they only seem to want to huddle under cover.

(If you knew these birds, especially Blizzy who is in this picture, you'd know this was out of character. That's how much rain we were getting in short order here.)

Some were only a little wet.

Some were drenched.

But I think we can all agree that the wettest beard belonged to Mako today. (And maybe even the stinkiest stink-eye... She's madder than--okay, I won't go there.)

I also caught 2. a broody glare while I was out there.

Which means that...
WAY DONE!
A broody glare is number 50!!

I caught 94. ZOMBIES.

I caught 3. wattle action.

I even caught zombie wattle action!

Err... Yeah.
I tried my two close-up themes, too. The 23. close-ups on feathers turned out beautifully!
Wyandotte Ani's neck feathers:

Wyandotte Raven's wing/shoulder feathers

Easter-egger Cressida's neck feathers:

Easter-egger Merlin's wing/shoulder feathers:

Easter-egger Betty's beard:

Red Sexlink Skua's back:

24. Close-ups on combs were alright, but... a little strange.
Rhode Island red Twisty's single comb:

Sebright Amy's rose comb:

Easter-egger Betty's pea comb:

Wandering around the chicken yard, here and there I spotted 74. lost feathers:

(I didn't think to check around the Guinea enclosure--I might revisit this theme later for that!)
You know that pose that footballers always do in pictures, with their one foot back like they're about to charge? That's why we call this the 14. SPORTS POSE:

*PHEW* It was really hot when I took these pictures! It's getting harder and harder to go out in that heat...
