Coop location. Venting. - Page 4

I'd only change one thing. The graffiti art would look better in red instead of pink.

I hear you on the finances. We're using only what we've found on site, so far. Lots of repurposed junk.

I will have photos and updates tonight. Roof is almost complete, as soon as it cools off to a reasonable (non skeleton melting) temperature, I will get up there and finish up. I will give more details after I am finished with that stuff.

Have to swap chickens out with the guys who sold them to us. NOT Welsummers, OEGB, totally NOT going to work for us. I love the bantams, but they are too small and the eggs are meh....doing that today. Then on with the show.

My plan is to be done and have the chooks moved in on Friday!

Thanks!

Yeah re-purposed is fine. I need to get up to the junk house trailer and grab another window and two more sheets of aluminum.

Do you guys think that siding grade aluminum will keep coons out? I'm still going to wrap the bottom of the outside walls with plywood (24"), and above that use the aluminum.

I HAVE enough plywood to wrap the entire thing, But I have more aluminum than plywood and still need to build a lean to for the goats that are coming later this summer.

Thanks!

We built our coop inside our garage with the run along side the house. Our coop is 12x4x9 rectangle room with 12 square feet of ventilation inside our garage. Our run is 22x5x5 which we cover in plastic in the winter. We also heat our coop, so it's more comfortable for me to clean in the winter. We free range morning to night during the summer days. Next year we are fencing our 4 acre lot to keep our chickens in. Right now I use sprinklers to keep them from crossing the property line or even getting close.

Here's my coop and run. We take the heater out in the summer.

We use welded wire and hardware cloth, so we can keep the coop door open an night that leads in the garage.

The aluminum should be fine just secure it good at the seams so they can't fold it and then get in.

Thanks for the replies guys, and Nicole that's a pretty good coop redux,12sq ft huh? Hmmm....

Joe, yeah the seams are liquid nailed ans screwed together with machine screw every 18" (on the roof). On the exterior walls, they will be battened at the corners, and on the seams for sure! Thanks.

AND as promised\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

coop roof 1.jpg
coop roof 2.jpgcoop roof 3.jpg

All the battens are hardwood! Got those from the feed store owner (free). He's a good old boy. Afraid he's gonna go out of business though. Just like everyone else. :( All that's likely to be left is TSC, and if that happens, I'm planting oats and wheat and feeder corn up on the hill and make my own _ _ _ _ feed.

I plan on finishing off the roof (which is mostly siding the garage and bump garage) with the same aluminum siding to prevent water running into the coop.

Then the exterior probably Friday evening/Saturday morning. It is just hotter than _ _ _ _ here all day long...

Coming along nice.

Make sure it is vented well, the aluminum can make it hot in there.

It's very nice! We put the ventilation at the very top. It is very dry inside our coop.smile.png. Our coop is 9ft tall. It's all the way across the top from one end to the wall. We do insulate most of it during the winter to keep the heat in.

Here's a picture, not the greatest since taken on iPhone.

600262c2-585a-b6d0.jpg

Our steel roof/side panel in our run has really helped keep the run cooler. Before it was so hot, we ended up housing our chickens inside our basement with high 90 to 100 degree weather.
Our run before the update.

Nice coop. I was planning on venting through the soffit I am going to install. And then use crude toggles and inserts to vary the venting to get things right. I scored about three boards worth of 5/4 ply (green) today >:) So, scavenger strikes again! Today is just too freekin hot to do anything outside really. Just about killed me babysitting a few chick trips to the herb garden....tomorrow is going to be milder I hope. I probably will finish the roof off, and get the siding repair as well this evening.

More pics tmarra night.

Thanks guys!
