We've got Chicken Math striking us too!  We only wanted 4 chicks, had to take 6 from TSC.  Added 2 more bantams from a friend, and yesterday I ran into a lady with 2 chicks that the grandparents gave to her children - which she doesn't want!  I think we'll be taking them and I heard my husband ask my daughter what she thought about getting some a couple more of the sibs to the little bantam chicks we got - because they are so cute!!  We went from ONLY 4 to probably around 12 in 2 months!!   wee.gif

Started our first flock of 12 on 3/4/2012 with lots of learning and loss.  Our Current flock of 14 - 1 Jersey Giant rooster, 1 Tetra Tint, 1 White Leghorn, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 OEGB/Silkie mixes added 8 new chicks this spring: 1 Barred Rock, 1 Red Sex Link, 1 Black Sex Link, 1 Black Cochin, 1 RIR, 1 Silver-laced Wyandotte, and 2 Easter Eggers.

Our first time was a 26-bird, broiler experiment for 8 weeks.  All-in-all, 60 birds will pass through our back yard this summer.  Only 26 of them are broilers!!!

guinneas are good at eating bugs...so lets get 10, we'll harvest them for meat at the end of summer

we're getting guinneas, so why not get 5 buff O's and 5 black Australorps

8 came with the coop off craigslist

6 came from a friend that had to reduce flock size per city ordinance

Chicken math does have a down side.  One of the Dominiques died when two White Polish roosters kept her from the food (I didn't realize what was going on in time).  I dispatched the White Polish roosters for killing the Dominiques and a couple chicks didn't make it out of the brooding box.  The sad side of chicken math.
