Hello! Newbie to the chicken world here!

Thread Starter

Good Afternoon Everybody!

I just go the OK from my husband to start a small flock.  After years of reading up on chickens, breeds, raising, and coops I am going to take the plunge.  My mother in law Lives in Virginia, and this weekend they are going to a chicken swap meet!!!  I wish i can go to choose my own chickens, but she is more experienced than i and i trust her judgment.

Being an active Civil War Reenactor I am interested in the Heritage breeds.  I have my heart set on Delaware Blues and Dominiques.  However, with the understanding that they may be hard to find, I have a second choice of Amerucanas, some sort of fancy Orpington, and a silky or a Polish chicken just for fun.  I have the sickening feeling that 4 will not be enough, but i will have to make do as we are in a small village in Pennsylvania.

But a  little about me, I have wanted a chicken ever since I was a kid and saw at a garage sale, the homeowner had a beautiful Bantam rooster running around.  He strutted right up to me and actually allowed me to pet him!  I was hooked ever since!  That was quite a number of years ago, and now that i have my own home, 1 acre and a large garden plot that can use some natural pest control, so chickens would be wonderful!!!!   Next door is a farm, with their own chickens (3 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Pearl Leghorns, 2 Barred Plymoth Rocks, and a gold laced bantam hen (she's a lot bitchier than all the others, guess she has something to prove).

This weekend we will be building our little coop, and I will be all ready when my chickens come!!!!

Nice to meet you all and I look forward to sharing stories about my girls very soon!!!

Toodles!

Leslie

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?
