Just bought the 1588 on Strombergs. It was a few dollars cheaper. They also sell eggs, which I haven't ordered yet. I'll wait to get the eggs so that the incubator is up and running when they arrive. Strombergs sells the Royal Purples (my favorite) for $20.00 for 6 eggs, with a 12 egg minimum. I have no idea if that's a good price or not, but I DO want Royal Purples, so it may be worth it for the assurance of the guineas I want.

 

Thank you so much for your help. I do feel less anxious about it knowing the incubator is good for beginners. Somehow it seemed like rocket science when I read about it, but I'm going to just jump in, be vigilant, do my best and hope for healthy keets. When they hatch, I know what to do to brood them up, so that doesn't worry me at all. And I'll research, research, research.

 

I took day old chickens and they're now happily in the yard, chasing bugs, scratching and rolling in the dirt. Guineas can't be any harder. I already know one person who wants more guineas, and I can place an ad in the Georgia Market Bulletin to sell the rest. And, of course, keep a few for myself.  What can go wrong, right? :).

Congrats! You will love it.

$20 for 6 eggs?!?! That is more than $3 an egg! You can get them here for $1 or less per egg. I sell my keets for $3 each, including Royal Purple and lots of other colors.

Really? Well that's interesting! I'll have to hold out for the $1.00 per egg cost. Wonder how they get away with charging so much? (Newbies like me jump in without knowing any better!)

 

When you say, "You can get them here..." do you mean that you sell eggs, or that I can get them from this blog?

Check the Buy~Sell~Trade section here on BYC, you might find a deal on Guinea eggs or win an auction. You can also place a wanted ad. $3 per egg is pricey... unless that includes shipping? Otherwise, ouch! Congrats on ordering the 1588 highfive.gif You'll be a hatch-o-holic in no time! wink.png

Will check out Buy, Sell, Trade section. I didn't check to see if that included shipping (probably not), but I'm not going to buy any eggs until I know the machine in up, running and the temp/humidity is right. Then I'll get them. But I guess I can put the word out now though.

 

A "hatch-o-holic" might be in my near future.

When I said you can get them here I mean in my area. Check out craigslist... you might find something there.

I don't sell eggs, just keets.

hatch-o-holic is an understatmenet. LOL. I was a happy little owner of 4 guineas just last year and had never hatched a thing, nor wanted to. Then I found this thread and slam bam I became a hatch-o-holic.

 

My guineas were off to a slow laying start this year, or more likely they were hiding their eggs better. I have only been able to hatch out 5 keets so far, 4 pearls and a lite lavender, but I did hatch out 3 WH ducklings a month ago as well. Now I have 5 guinea eggs under a silkie, my peahen is sitting on 6 eggs, a hen has decided to sit on duck eggs, my incubator is filled with guinea eggs except for 5 duck eggs and 4 chicken eggs I am hatching for my neighbor.

 

I have even built a seperate hatcher so I can do staggered hatches.

 

Enablers, all of you!!!!!!!

I just purchased an incubator and ordered some fertile guinea eggs. I bought an assortment from different color hens. I decided to get guineas last year when the ticks on my property decided to take up residence in my bedroom. My bug man was at my house every week. The ticks were biting not only our dogs but us too. It was terrible.

I've already learned more than I ever wanted to learn about ticks. Now I have a lot to learn about guinea fowl and I'm glad to have this site with so many knowledgeable people.

BTW If anyone wants some info on ticks, I'll be glad to share my knowledge with you too. LOL

We are on 5 acres of woods surrounded by acres and acres of woods, so I know the issue you have with ticks. Our tick population has certainly decreased in the last year since we got guineas. They still aren't completely gone but that just gives me reason to have more guineas. Ours free range all of the woods surrounding our property and luckily our neighbors are happy to have something helping get rid of ticks.
