Newbie in NC

Thread Starter

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.  My name is Matthew and I live in Western NC.  I work as a Registered Nurse in our local hospital in the ER, and ICU.  I grew up in a farming community, and we had cows, pigs, and chickens growing up.  My wife and I have been wanting to start a small hobby farm on our property but I had to establish a rule that if we can't eat it we can't feed it.  She grew up raising and showing livestock but to her they are all pets. We made a compromise with chickens since they can produce eggs and we love eggs.  We started our flock about 5 weeks ago with a straight run of 10 Speckled Sussex of which I'm almost sure 3 are cockerels. Eventually we would like to breed chickens for our toddler to show when she is old enough in the local 4H chapter. My avatar is of my daughters favorite chick which we have named Peepete, we hope she turns out to be a hen so we don't have to get rid of her.

I'm in Wilkes County NC. Speckled Sussex can be a little tricky to sex. I have several young SS now and I'm seeing 2 roosters, I think. The males are usually whiter on their chests and of course they have the larger, redder comb and wattles. Both sexes seem to have large legs though. Welcome to BYC and you'll be spending time here regularly.

I live with my partner and our daughter in the foothills of NC. We LOVE our critters!

Hey, Im a little further west than you in Clay Co. I have been surfing the site for a long time, just now decided to join. The three I have that I think are cockerels all have the larger redish combs and waddles, and tend to challenge each other.

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?

Mark 11:22-23

"Have faith in God," Jesus answered. "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?
