Hen ripped open by rooster......help!!!!

My 4 hens have been in with my rooster a little over a week now, and yesterday he must have slipped getting off, and his spur ripped her side open under her wing, I didn't find it until today, so couldn't get it stitched up, I did clean it up well, an sprayed her good with Vetracin.SP?
anyway is there anything else I can do?

Now the big question how do I prevent this from happening again, I think a saddle would not do much good its open under the wings for the wing hole..... can I trim or cut his spurs blunt? make a sheath cover for them SOMETHING............

My poor girl......she appears fine, is eating well, and loving being a house chicken.......... with special treats, and lots of coming and going to watch, with lots of attention from the big momma chicken........... but I feel so bad for her, my rooster is a very good boy and treats his ladies well, but he is however just a rooster, and accidents happen, there must be some way to never have this happen again.............. any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.........TY Kim

I am sure you are not the only one this has happened to. That being said, and having several hens needing suturing from wounds, you may be able to treat this at home. If the wound is not to deep ( through the skin only and not through the skin and into muscle) you should keep it clean with some VERY dilute betadine solution and warm water ( at local pharmacy or your veterinarian). You can apply neosporin to a superficial wound but not to deep wounds. If it is deep it may need suturing, however, the optimal time to close a wound with sutures has come and gone, so it may be better to leave it open to allow for drainage. In regards to the roo...... His spurs can definitely be trimmed. You can do this at home. I would recommend having some stiptic powder on hand in the event you trim the spur to close. Like a dog or cats nail that has been trimmed to short the spur will bleed. Just trim the spur back some and if you have a Dremmel you can round the edges some so they are not rough. I did this with my roo after he somehow lost an entire spur and bled all over the coop. I trimmed the remaining spur so it would happen again. I hope this helps you. Good luck!
