eye lid bubbles, scabbing, puffed body ,heads down, lethargic, puffed crops 2 month old chicks

My 2 month old chicks presented with sonme type of eye scab, closer look showd raised small bumps. This started last couple weeks. Almost looked like scarring it was crusty on a couple chicks. Some have it and some don't.  I thought they were getting scratched from stickers, then yesterday they were all puffed up not eating and lethargic.  Their crops were puffed and have been on and off could not get grit on the island.  But thought since they were on the ground they would be ok. Thought they were cold cause it rained. Put them up last night and when I took them out this am one was dead and another this afternoon.  I put cider vinegar in one waterer and sugar water in the second, then started them on tetracycline today.  No other antibiotiic available and no chicken vets on island.  I used clorax to clean the night cage as we put them up so the rats wont get them and moved their pen to another area of grass.   They are not coughing no respiratory drainage.  I thought they had "sour crop and I tipped them upside down and massaged their crop and some a lot of fluid came out.  I am not familiar with any of this just doing what I can. Some food came out.  I guess I have been lucky at I have 50 layers with no real health illness then I got these girls.  Also their feathers are not coming in so I put diatanaceous earth in the ground.I hate to see tomorrow when I wake up.  Any body have any ideas am I doing anything right?

What are they eating? Sounds like a possible vitamin deficiency to me, though could be any number of things.

If they had sour crop, antibiotics would make it worse, since antibiotics are not recommended for anything of a fungal nature, so I wouldn't give antibiotics since you have no idea what you're treating.

They had 1 month of medicated chick feed and then now on reg chick feed.  They have eatten some fresh veggies swiss chard and cabbage leaf a couple times. They are on the grass.  But I can't find any grit.  should I give them some sand?  I thought I rread that some have used sand.  got plenty of that that I can heat ans sterilez and give them. Still puffed this am huddled. But more energetic they are except one eating and drinking..  Thank you for you input.  If it is bacterial then I imagine 24 hours of antibiotic would show improvement?

Their age would suggest coccidiosis, but not the scabs-that is not a symptom of that at all. Fluffed up/hunched up, lethargic is one sign of cocci and bloody poop is another.

Not sure what the heck the scabs could be, but many skin issues are vitamin-related, which is why I mentioned a vitamin deficiency. How about mosquitoes and/or biting gnats? Could that be an issue?

You may have several things happening at once. Crop issues can be caused by lack of grit, but if they get grit off the ground, they're getting it without you giving it to them.

Mahalo, I thought the same on the grit but as I am no expert good to hear same thought process.  They were vacciinated and have had medicated feed.  Maybe I should switch them back to some medicated?.  I need to read up on that.  But would the tetracycline help?  I couldn't fine Tynol?? sp not sure of the antibiotic. Have to get my chick diseases in order.  Better human RN then chick.

You would need Corid for coccidiosis.

I went to the video I think you are on the right tract looks like coccidiosis. I think the eye blisters are something else.  I am running to see if I can find some med.  I will dump the tetracycline water when I get back.you think?  No antibiotic.  I am going to see what they have at feed store and will be back online later.  AWesome I think we may be on to something.wee.gif

Medicated feed is a moot point when they already have cocci. It will not treat it. You need to get Corid, which has a higher concentration of the same med as in the medicated feed, and it works quite well. You give for 5 days, no more than 7, and usually, that fixes it. The med is not an antibiotic, but a thiamine blocker.

I agree, if they have cocci, antibiotics will hurt them by damaging the intestines further and killing off more good gut bacteria. Cocci already damages the intestines.

Ok could NOT find Corid all they had was Sulmet.  sulfamethazine  It said it was for cocci.  Anyone use this procuct.  I want to be careful not to just keep switching medications.  I have to say the majority do look better today with a day of tetracycline.  But 2 still dont look so good.  Kind of forced them to drink by hand. All the others are acting much better.  I took some photos to share of the eye bubbles. I will try to get those loaded. Seeing as though this is the tropics bugs gnats or other things may cause the eye issues.  Didn't think about the thorny weeds.  Stupid me. They are also looking bald with the new feathers in so I had put DE out for mites maybe that effected the eyes?  I have to say this is the first chicks I had shipped from mainland from one of "the big" hatcheries and they have been really not healthy.  Thanks for the advise on the medicated food I thought 30 days was all they needed>?
