Its day 22 and all of my other chicks have hatched already and he is the only one left, early yesterday morning he externally pipped a small hole and hasn't done anything else since. He peeps when i turn the light on in the room to see if he had made any progress, and its very loud. Should i help him a little bit? Maybe make an artificial zip for him or something? He is my only pure bred egg, he was a special extra that the person i got the eggs from gave me. Its from her show quality Barred Rocks that she keeps away from all her other chickens so that the don't breed together. I have been keeping my fingers crossed that it would hatch. :(

some folks will disagree with me, but i figure you have two choices at this point, let nature take it's course or (since it has been over 24 hours) help the little guy out of his egg.

Has the bator been opened at all?

If you have been opening your incubator, he is probably stuck or to big to make the turn. I would carefully pick a little shell at a time. If you see blood stop.

I admit i have open the incubator to check his progress a couple of times because he is in an odd spot away from the window, also i have been taking the chicks out once a day since day 20 when they started hatching. I'll try and help him out and tell you guys how it goes.

We have success! I thought that it would be like rocket science :p Once i got most of the membrane off he kick boxed the rest of the way out and it laying there exhausted. One thing i noticed it that he has very thick legs and feet compared to the rest of the chicks, is this a barred rock thing or is he swollen?

He is perfectly fine, walking, eating and drinking perfectly. He is a star X barred rock mix, or he might be a pure bred rock, i am not sure. But he is defiantly the cutest thing in the world. I got 2 1/2 dozen light Sussex and light Sussex x star eggs and the same of barred rock and barred rock x star, i guess i will figure out if they are mixed or pure bred when they feather out fully. The chick i helped was from an egg prelabeled BR (barred rock) while all the others were labeled BR X, so i am hoping he is pure bred. In total i had 21 chicks hatch, 14 Sussex and crosses and 6 BR and BR crosses. I will post pics later of him
