Moving out!

I am thinking its time for our chicks to be moving out.  They have officially outgrown the brooding box.  :)  We have an 8 wk Polish and 3 other hens, Australorp and RIR that are 7 wks.  I think they will do just fine.  My only concern is that I also have 2 younger polish that I bought.  They are 3-4 wks old.  Are they too young to move out with the older ones?  They have been in the brooder with the older ones since they were a day old.

Its been in the 40's here at night, but I plan on leaving the heat lamp in the coop for them at night.

Any thoughts/opinions?

If you have a heat lamp set up for them they should be absolutely fine..40 is a little cold but they usually huddle together at night...I would continue to keep them all together or you'll get major separation anxiety from them. When i moved mine out they had most of their feathers, not all, but they huddle together for warmth, of course, that night temps dropped to freezing and it snowed the next day, naturally. I am not wired yet, so no heat lamp. When i checked them they were absolutely OK in a deep bed of pine chips. I think they were about 2 weeks old. If out have any doubts just watch them a bit, and if they move around, eat and drink , they are fine, if they are too cold they will just mope with feathers fluffed out. I also check their feet and legs, cool not really cold to touch so hey, it put my mind at ease. I don't want to loose any of my pullets at this stage to something preventable.d

Thanks so much for the input!  I was pretty worried about the seperation anxiety also.  They all do so good together.  Thought being seperated from their buddies might do more damage than the cold temps at night.  Thanks for confirming.  I will make sure they have a heat lamp.  They will get a new home and I will get my laundry room back.  Its a win win all the way around!  ya.gif

Agreed with wrangler, The older ones will be fine, but the younger ones are a little to small for that without a heat lamp. UNLESS they are extremely developed for their age, and have all their feathers in...
