Three week old RIR chicks with blood in their stools?

Thread Starter

I just bought 3 three week old RIR chicks last night.  I kept them in an animal carrier in my chicken coop with my other 5 week old pullets.  I found blood in their stools this morning.  I took them and carrier out of the coop.  They are now in a large dog carrier on my back porch.  I am not sure what is wrong with them.  I just got my pullets last week.  So I've only been a chicken owner for 8 days.  Before I spend a bunch of money or give them something that might hurt them or make them worse I would like to know what I am probably facing and what I need to do.  They appear healthy, a bit under weight, they are chirping and walking around picking.  They have feathers on their wings.  Please help me to know where I need to start.

From the symptoms it does sound like Coccidiosis. Have you put them anywhere where adult/older stock have been previously on the ground? Fed ACS chick crumb to them?

They have been sprayed with Paracox 8 vaccine so this should have provided a level of oo-cyst immunity so when they come into contact with the real thing, they should have enough defences to fight it off however it’s obviously not full proof as it also depends upon the birds natural immunity.

To protect the Maran who is showing no symptoms yet, you will need to clean brooders/drinkers etc with Bi-oo-cyst disinfectant to kill off any oo-cysts that the Orp might be shedding in her poop and I wold separate them.

You have either a couple of options with the Orp- cull her humanely- purchase Baycox from the Vet and put her back under heat- feed egg and chick crumb made into a mash, (this will kill any Cocci dead, however it is expensive and may be too late for the Orp)

I suspect that as the other growers we have from the same batch are showing no symptoms and neither is the Maran, that the Orp just doesn’t have the same defences (some hens are just not as strong) or you’ve put them on ground where your adult hens have been running previously???

It does sound like coccidiosis.  Go to TSC and buy Corid.  It is a medication that you mix in their water for 5 - 7 days.  Coccidia can kill and since they are already pooping blood, you need to get them started on treatment as soon as possible.  Also, if you could get some probiotics or yogurt, that would be great to try and sooth their poor intestines.

Good luck.  They chicks should start feeling better rather quickly.  Do not be tempted to stop treatment early.

I would verify that it is indeed blood and not intestinal lining. Here is a great link of normal and abnormal poop.

Agree 100%.  If your chicks do indeed have coccidiosis and you do not treat you may loose some or all of them.  It can get very bad very fast and once you reach a certain point they have sustained to much internal damage and there is no saving them.  If it is only normal intestinal shedding then it won't matter either way if you do or don't treat.  Far better to be safe then sorry.
